| | amazing how this is become such a debate on how to use proper english when saying numbers,
the british always confuse things when it comes to spelling and their own little slang words.
but no you don't use the and when your dealing with decimals
its like this 134.134
one hundred thirty-four point one thirty-four
or
one hundred thirty-four thousandths a "and" is not needed. |

QUOTE(truefusion @ Sep 8 2005, 03:16 PM) Isn't "and" supposed to be where there is a period? You cant say One-hundred and thirteen, unless it's like this 100.13, last i remembered. You are correct sir. You wouldn't add and before the last number. If you have a period, however, then things would be completely different. 12.09 = Twelve and nine-tenths. You can also say twelve point nine. 1209 = One thousand nine. Saying one thousand and nine doesn't make any sense. So to sum it up, Michael is right (first try) and simply-me is also correct (except it's Three hundred sixty-eight million, ninty-two thousand, nine...not three )

QUOTE 1209 = One thousand nine. Saying one thousand and nine doesn't make any sense. That number is One thousand two hundred and nine... talk about irony. lol Yes that's the correct way to speak, like Nguyen said.. (Just felt like seconding that) Panda

Correction: Twelve point nine would mean: 12.9 not 12.09

it kinda sounds like one of those tricks where they ask you, "Are You Smart" and when you say yes the ask you something like "Tell Me The Alphabet" then you say it: A,B,C,D...SO ON...W,X,Y, AND Z If you said and they will say "ha, your not smart andis not in the alphabet" lol, I use to hear this when i was really small

QUOTE the british always confuse things when it comes to spelling and their own little slang words. QUOTE proper british english bah, no wonder we beat you guys back in the revolutionary war. :lol Saint_Michael, isn't it ironic/illogical that you say that English people don't know how to speak English. Surely we should set the rules of our own language? I don't understand some of the American slang, either. It's just cross-cultural. If I was being sly, however, I would point out that English is generally more logical. e.g. You say bathroom and we say toilet. We do use bathroom, but only when the room has a bath (or at least a shower/jacozi/other in in there, not just a cubicle). BTW, back to the number things. I would say: 1: 368,892,123 Three hundred and sixty-eight million, eight hundred and ninty-two thousand, one hundred and twenty-three. 2: 368,092,003 Three hundred and sixty-eight million, ninety-two thousand, and three.

QUOTE(cmatcmextra @ Sep 9 2005, 12:26 AM) Red represents something incorrect Green respresents something correctQUOTE(kakingho) yesh........ i think i'm learning british See some people do still learn the good, correct version of english Add ands after hundreds: 13 ==> wouldn't be one and three but thirteen113 ==> would be one hundred and thirteen103 ==> would be one hundred and threeAnd if all the hundreds have the value of 0, then you add and in before the tens and units: 1,000,003 ==>wouldn't be one million three1,000,003 ==> would be one million and three1,000,703 ==>wouldn't be one million and seven-hundred and three1,000,703 ==> would be one million, seven-hundred and threeOn the final example the hundreds column had a value of 1 or more so and was added after the hundreds instead of before. I think that sums it up pretty well even though I got confused by the end of it thx.....i understand more now ^O^ but how about 1,003,003 1,003,703 1,703,703 ??

no problem, i think this topics need to be close before we all get out of hand. but on the topic of the english language, yeah i concur that the english language is well unqiue to the point that alot of words meaning the same thing can be the oppopsite as well, along with the fact that adding a letter or taking letter could change it drasticaly, but then you have look at pronouncation and the root words and how it sounds. we should create topic in the debate section and see what people think about the english language as a whole and in all forms that it takes.

Comments welcomed. I'd love to hear your views. (1) What a Hero Means to Me Nitefell A hero. Someone of admirable traits or qualities. All of us have
a hero. To some, a hero might be their favorite actor or musician. To others, someone closer to

Many find people of fame or importance their heroes. A patriotic American supporting the war in
Iraq may think George Bush is a hero, while others believe he every decision he makes is wrong. On
