| | Egyptian president Mubarak, who has ruled Egypt for 24 years, had won a new six-year. He could complete 30 years in power.
Mubarak, 77, has been in power since 1981, when he succeeded the assassinated Anwar Sadat for four times in referendum in which Egyptians could only say yes or no to a single parliament-nominated candidate. The election was the first ever in which Mubarak faced a competitor . His government has touted the change as a major democratic reform.
But opposition were sceptical, with most major parties boycotting the election. The voter was lower than expected (only 23 % of the voter) and the election was marred by "the bias of the state apparatus, the unfairness of the election commission and mistakes.
According to the election commission chairman : - The turnout was 23 % of voter - Mubarak received 6,316,714 votes (88.6%). - Second place went to the first of the opposition with 7.3%, - The third candidate received 2.8% and - 2.3% went to the rest of 7 candidates.. |

Finland's President Election
- Tarja Halonen 45% (1)
As you might know, in Finland we're choosing president to next six years. It was known in
December 2005 that Tarja Halonen (democr. and our current president) will "win" but I didn't
think she would get almost 50% of all votes. In Finland, if nobody gets more than 50% of all votes,
there will be another round. And now it is extremely interesting to see, if there will be second
round. It is no-brainer to say that Halonen will win anyway as Sauli Niinistö is getting less than
20%. But you never know......
