Easy linux (good for windows users)

nate9000
i really don't see a differnce, except that windows is evil and EXTREAMLY UNSTABLE!, but i'm talking about ease of use!

if ur a windows user, and wanna try an easy to get/use linux without installing ANYTHING on ur hard drive, i suggest KNOPPIX, you burn it on to a 700 MB CD, u boot ur computer from the cd, and it autodetects ur hardware, and ur good to go! even go online if u have DSL or higher! (not sure about diel up...) it starts u off in KDE desktop (yes windows users, you don't have to use just one type of desktop!)

What is KNOPPIX®?
KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.
(discription from knoppix website)

just go to http://www.knoppix.org/ and click ur language, and read on how to download!

Either you use that or try different linux distributions and have them on your hdd. biggrin.gif

Make 2 partitions on your hard drive - one Ext3 and the other linux swap - use partition magic. You can also format the partition as reiser (a newer file system for linux) when you are installing linux

Knoppix is the first distro I "played". It's really the best for the beginner.

Some other notable live cd distros, these can be installed to hard drive too right? (including knoppix)

Gnoppix
http://www.gnoppix.org/

Gnoppix is a linux live cd based upon Ubuntu Linux. It can be compared to Knoppix but GNOPPIX uses GNOME as desktop environment.

LOL!!! Nareth, that is awesome. I too like Windows XP A LOT!!! I will admit to using Debian linux however, just as an alternative for software. I do however, run an Apache Web Server on XP, along with a MySQL server and several other VERY demanding programs on only 265MB ram, and XP runs like a champ. That's something linux can't claim for 256MB.

You are entirely right, Linux is anything but designed for n00bs. Windows needs a lot of programs and utilites for you to protect yourself, linux doesnt need any

i got one and thats a firewall. SP2 has a firewall not as good as paid one. but its more secure than you think

I dont see why i should go to the trouble when windows actually works ok - once you stick a firewall on it.

theres 100's of more problems that you can't fix with a fire wall, and with linux, (with no fire-wall) is so much more safe then windows with a very good fire-wall!, and you still can't forget, adware, and spyware don't exsist on linux

i use wionxp and never spyware. its IE wich gives spyware. just get rid of it right after your instaltion of firefox

Linux is famous for its security amonst windows and other OS, claims to be more stable and it is... Less hackers and its free! Most people think that windows are good, but hey what about the features in linux? Isnt it as good? If you do not know how safe your bank account's money is, think again...probably linux! Your money is safe behind these secured servers installed with linux. Linux may not be as good as XP for home use becoz not all people do know commandline commands, unless you are a pro. Hackers dont hack Unix based operating systems why ? Its simply because they are opensource and they are meant for developers and people that really know how to deal with it. Not as yet for home use tho, but as for the recent Fedora and Suse Desktops 9 and Mandrake projects its has made enhancements and you can even go wireless, nevertheless you can expect less virus and spywares that really affects you and your pocket...! DONT forget the time when we all window users are hit with the "CIH ; Blaster ; Sasser worm" virus dont tell me that you are not affected somehow, well maybe not you but what about the others ur surroundings ... Just my few cents

  5. Best Anti-spyware For Windows Xp
    (1)
I've read back a few posts with interest and have noted most of the discussion on security is
about anti-virus software. However although I have had problems with viruses in the past most
problems on my computer (and many others, I suspect) are now caused by spyware that are not detected
by anti-virus progs. I'm currently using an older version of windows but will soon be getting a
new computer with windows xp. I've been experimenting on my current computer with a number of
trial anti-spyware packages (there seem to be very many of them). These include: spy....

Overview Unfortunately, Apple considers the iPod a "closed platform", so technical info is
basically non-existant. This project has involved a fair amount of guesswork, reverse-engineering
and experimentation, resulting in a Linux kernel based on the uClinux (http://www.uclinux.org) port
running on the iPod. We hope that this port of Linux to the iPod inspires others to see what their
"closed platform" hardware can do! Due to the highly collaborative nature of this project, we
decided to use a WIKI for our documentation. Its goal is to provide a strong structure of....
