| | I've been having this problem lately of dropping off-line (always on, cable access) I use to have to cycle (unplug and replug) the Cable Modem and the Router (wired Router) in sequence to get back on-line. So I replaced the Cable Modem and Router. Now I'm dropping offline less often, and I can get back on by just cycling the Router.
Q. Is there anyway to "test" a Cable Modem and/or Router to see for sure where the "stoppage" is?

Does you ever tried accesing your router with a web browser. most likely the adress will be http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 (or another adress look in the manual). In the configuration site there is most of the time a logging, where you see the events. There you may find an answer for your problem. Note: When you power-off the router the logging is cleared, so try to reach it before powering off.

I've got a linksys wireless router (BEFW11S4 V4) that causes lots of packet drops when I used it
wirelessly. I didn't realise that packet drop while surfing webpages until when I tried to play
online games. I tried Warcraft III and it becomes super laggy. I also tried to ping my router and
sometimes I got more than 700ms latency and packet losts. I don't know much about routers but I
believe it's something got to do with wireless buffers, however I couldn't find any related
help from the internet. I'm trying to ask people in trap17 what are thei...

Transfer Through Modem?
- I want to know if I can transfer data through my old modem. (4)
I have an old modem that still works fine (The cable guys thouht it was bad so they gave us a new
one for free). So I got this modem and my two computers. The two computers don't like eachother
and won't connect through an ethernet. Basically what I want to do is hook up my two
computers through my modem. I don't know if this is possible for data transfer like a router or
a switch but it's worth a try. On the back of my modem, there is a Coaxial cable, an ethernet
cable, and a usb cable input. What I want to know if I can do is hook up one computer wit...

How does one discover the filesystem identity which Versions 4.0, 3.9, etc. attach to an internal,
PCI dial-up modem? Is it "/dev/ttyS4" or "/dev/ttyS14" or "tts/14" or what? I have a
fully-functional hardware modem which works fine on Version 3.6 but which none of the later versions
can identify for an effective "/dev/modem" link. "lspci" lists the modem and its interrupt request
number (IRQ 10), but not its serial port identity, and "dmesg" doesn't seem to list the device
at all....

Modem Problems
- anyone have fault with the 5699b? (4)
I recently purchaced a USR 5699b and had very bad results, I then exchanged it for another 5699b,
and had even worse results, for example I actualy make a connection about 50% of the time, but of
that the liklyhood of the connection working is quite slim. Here is a screenshot of a ping
google.com -t that I ran, before, during and after a connection: How come it can make a
successful connection twice, and then not be able to make the connection anymore? and this
isn't a one time thing, as you can tell by the scroll bar, I have been running the ping for
awile, a...
