Well, i must say that i will implement this for public and community use for free.
yes, i intended to write using PHP, MySQL driven dictionary site in my native language (Myanmar) which can translate English to Myanmar.
I've a littol stuck here at starting point and still dig out the google to find the resources. But no luck and still need more.. I've look through quite number of books as well.
Can anybody kind to share the Algorithm, Serach Engine and MySQL database relationship?? I know this could be $$ but when i was doing this as free for my people..

it could something like dictionary.com
serch query by english word and display as myanmar meaning/translated output!!

or point me out some good reference book for this...

If I read you right you want to make a thing where I can enter a word and it will translate and define that word. Well I'd love to help you with a little code but unfirtunatly that isn't an easy task, the only type of translation that can be preformed easly it english-english or something like that, what I mean is that many people consider sign language a diffrent language when really it is (at the simplest form) just a diffrent character set for english. Now that's not bad but what you have is a translation system known as literal translation, where there are no rules one word is the same as the next, you can break the english words down to letters and then sub the letters for hand signals.

That's literal translation, but if you want to make a language to language translation there are rules, which I'm sure you are aware of, things that define grammer and word layout in a language. What you need is a fuzzy logic language, that would determin the meaning of a word based upon context and then translate it to something of a simmilar meaning. i will do the translation which i mean, i have a on-hand ready English-Myanmar dictionary for quite a number of different version. i'm thinking to build the database(MySQL) for that and make use PHP to query through..
- it gonna huge blow, so need to consider the optimization for server load(ram)
- and the algo have to be very smart. spider? robot? indexing? i'm still missing a lot of points here.
yes, your point is not directly help out but thank for your info.. so as i can think about synchronization for translation with other..

Hi, this sounds like a cool project. It's ambitious though. The dictionaries that you have--are they electronic? Are they in some format that you can parse? I imagine that you might need permission from the publisher to do that, but I don't know. They might be interested in having an online version of their dictionary, so they might work with you. Once you get the entries in a database and you have permission to host it you can look at making an interface to it.

The database schema would be very simple if you just wanted to query with a word of one language and retrieve a list of words in the other language that match. I'm used to coding in ASP, but there are a lot of PHP folks here that could help you out. Full dictionary entries for each word could also be done. I don't have experience with handling the different character sets, but maybe that's not too hard???

Full translations would be tricky, as was mentioned, but in my experience most of the automated translation services are awful anyway, so maybe you wouldn't have to do too much extra to get that working too.

- no. they all are not electronic form and all are in hardcopy, a book!
- if there is a electronic form, may not useful for me. bec it is most probably not in unicode character standard.
- our language unicode standard is about to new in Computer Technology.
- actually there is no official locale for our language for all OS yet.
- there is some and most are still in progress.
- i, just simply volunteer on this issue
- and thinking that having a dictionary site on line is good for those my language developer in i17n translation fields..
