[ Cp ] What If Gmail Had Been Designed By Microsoft?

Today I want to ponder the question: what if Microsoft, not Google, had created Gmail? What would be the differences in that web mail client for users today? What if we apply some of the same design rules that brought us Hotmail, for instance?
To start, here’s the current Gmail homepage after you log-in:
First of all, we need to rebrand the application name to something longer. Let’s call this Windows Live Gmail, and add some of the visual elements connected with Windows. Also, as in Hotmail, there needs to be less space for the email subjects to make place for a reading pane, which is full of verbose explanatory help text*:
For another design iteration in our inbox, we will need to camouflage the checkboxes next to the messages by putting a mail icon on top of them. Also, we need to break up messages from conversation threads into their individual parts. Furthermore, this version of Gmail needs to change from context-aware text ads to context-unaware graphic banners, which we’ll require to carry at least one clip art. Gmail currently has a chat box which I don’t use and thus find annoying, so I think we can build on that and expand it to a more full-featured chat widget, replacing the labels box. We’ll also adjust the spam filter slightly to show a couple of more bulk mails in the inbox:
There’s still not enough banner space available though, so let’s add a top row for ads and move the rest a bit more down. Also, to go back to the real Microsoft spirit, the inbox will now carry a maximum of 2 MB of messages – that was the amount Hotmail offered when Gmail was released with 1 GB in April 2004. Also, Microsoft-style, the actual start page of this service will not be the inbox, but a “welcome” splash screen. Please imagine the ads blinking at this point:
Somehow, this still misses part of the Microsoft feeling – the current design is just too bright & light, and it doesn’t have enough glamor. I’ll darken the colors a bit and add some smooth shades. Also, admittedly, Hotmail is a bit slower than Google’s competing service, so we’ll add some “loading” messages. Usually there’s less focus on unclutteredness with the Redmond guys, so we’ll add some MSN news bits and “special offers” where space is left. Plus, to increase user lock-in, let’s get rid of the “sign out” link. I’m also putting less emphasis on search, moving the box to the bottom right and replacing it with a dog:
Just as a note, you should quote material that's not yours as to prevent being docked for posting copyright material, and to put your post in an appropriate category.
Haha this remindes me alot of this youtube video. I love how different companies all have their own style and they are so incredibly different that you can do stuff like this
Heck the first thing that came to mind would be that the gmail would be full of security holes, spam and ads . Although I do see something missing and that it don't look vista enough so the color and graphics scheme would be a bit different that whats posted here. Of course I would laugh so hard if one day Microsoft and google made a deal with each other, but of course with the power google has right now it would be nearly impossible for that to get approval from the FTC and other 3 letter acronyms in the federal government.
An excellent way to poke a bit of fun at Microsoft and at the same time show the differences between two very different high-end technology companies. Clearly, someone had a lot of time on their hands (Which isn't a bad thing, in this case). Pretty great stuff , has me appreciate Gmail a bit more, that's for sure.
I belong to a WOW guild and we're considering a website for our members. Has anyone any
experience designing and running such a site? For a start, we're only interested in a basic
website for our members so we can show member character stats, announce raids and have a forum so we
can all leave messages for each other and discuss strategy and levelling tips. I know there are
templates available and I'm wondering if it would be just as easy to use one of the premade
templates rather than create a site from scratch. Any comments would be greatly appreciated ....

For those who are so loyal to Page and Brin that they can't let go of their Gmail accounts.
I've got some news for you. QUOTE INSERT, the Information Security Research Team, has
sucessfully created a proof of concept exploiting the “trust hierarchy” that exists
between mail service providers. Taking advantage of the way Gmail forwards messages, the team was
able to send 4000 messages in a short period of time from a single account without any
countermeasures taken by Google. Using Google as an open email relay is highly desierable for
spammers ....

In an internal memo Microsoft detailed how it plans to tie Win7 and Windows Live. It seems these
guys never learn. They don't don't get tired of monopolizing everything. I just pray the
anti-trust guys will do a good job on this one. Below is part of the blog by Mary Jo Foley about the
memo titled " Microsoft internal memo details Windows 7-Windows Live ties ": " In
January, I mentioned an internal Microsoft memo I had seen which provided details of how Microsoft
plans to more tightly integrate its Windows 7 operating system with Windows Live service....
I am one guy who has always beleaved that when MS made XPsp2 they raised the standards for them
selves. the package was just too good for their own good. When Sp3 came out I didnt hesitate to
download it and what did I get? The first thing that i noticed was I could no longer use remote
desktop. i'm sure this has since been rectified in RC2 but it realy turned me off. I never
realised any gains in the SP. Still on the subject I found Adrian Kingsley-Hughes' blog titled
' XP SP3 performance gains - Nothing to write home about ' interesting He wrote: QU....

with a 30-inch reflective surface in a clear acrylic frame. Prices will reportedly be $5,000 to

Gmail is SO AWESOME MAN! you can do sweet stuff with it like share calenders, chat, (of course
email too!), create websites (www.something.googlepages.com), and best of all, it's from a
company you can trust! Google is a billion dollar company, and I would probably let them have
total access of my computer - that's how much I trust them. What do you guys think? What is
your favorite emailer? What special features does it have?....
Here are some of the new technologies coming up from Microsoft Desk... Pretty amazing stuffs which
brings about change in how we look and do computations.... Haven't personally tried any of these
products... But was able to go thru some of the reviews and user experience. Though some of them are
not really very much satisfied with them, they very much agree that its just the beginning and there
is a long way to go... Here are the list of Products.... 1. Photosynth - This is something
which many people looked for... It does comaprison of photos and enables people....
I came across this topic which basically says that you can use Gmail to store your files. If
you're lucky, you get some free gmail invites to be sent to your friends when you open a gmail
account. Now if you just keep sending the invites to yourself, you'll end up with lots more
gmail accounts, isn't it? (I've tried it, you CAN create multiple gmail accounts by inviting
yourself) And that means more storage space if you use each account to store 2 GB of things right?
Could it possibly rival other premium data backup services online, most importantly....

QUOTE It seems that Microsoft has started flagging Gmail as a virus in their virus scanning
software Windows Live OneCare. Many people are reporting that every time they open Gmail, a warning
is displayed telling the user they are infected with "BAT/BWG.A". Now, either Gmail is a virus, or
Microsoft is generating false positives. Some affected by this "virus" say other anti-virus products
do not pick up the infection — to me, this is a bit suspicious. So who should be responsible for
fixing the problem? Either Google can wait for Microsoft to update their virus def....
Hai GMail share the feelings that you got when you recived your first GMail Invite. Here is mine
At first when I received a mail from Google that contained the link for my GMail account, my joy was
boundless. I signed up for GMail on 2/19/05 the time when GMail was just released and GMail invites
are rare. I was the only student in my college atthat time having a GMail Account. That made my
friends look in jealousy. That was great time. ....

Reding OS news I stumbled over this article that ran my bloodpressure up because it's on the
Microsoft monopoly issue. I begun with hating microsofts because their unfair politics on customers
and on the free market but my anger was not constructive at all. Now I don't hate it any more,
it has no point, but learn every day about alternatives that are free (open-source) and that can do
for many people or even businesses and advocate those in front of my friends and acquaintances (hope
wrote that right :-) ). On the other hand i now appreciate people inside Microso....

Hello all, I just got my hands on the Microsoft Publisher, which comes with the Microsoft Office
2003. I feel this is the best website designing tool ... much better than Dreamwevar and the likes.
I had finished making my site in under 10mins. Also the menu options, to put on your site are very
good n advance. The best part is that it not only lets you create fully customizable sites without
knowing absolutely anything about HTML, it also allows you to do other publishing tasks like making
greetings, stationary, visting cards etc. This is not an advert, but i think ....
I stumbled upon this link earlier today and was hoping someone could explain or walk me through
getting the script running. http://ponderer.org/del.icio.us I'll keep the post short since I
have no clue as to what I should. I'll just say that I rarely work on WinXP and I would rather
get it running on my old win box sitting in the corner. ....
Well, I was playing with google search engine when I stumbled onto this:
http://www.gmailforums.com/index.php ? It is an unofficial site set up to support gmail and was
said to be the first forum dedicated to Google's Gmail Service. What do you think about it?....

Have never really paid much attention to desktop suites, but built my first linux box and threw Open
Office www.openoffice.org onto the computer and it's awsome. I don't see why all small/mid
size companies and individuals would ever buy MS again. I'm just as happy to download a better
office suite for free than to buy one for $200. Really getting sick of microsoft.........

I've decided to pin a topic for Google Mail invites. I've seen so many of them, I thought it
would be nice to have them organized. If you're offering invites, please put them in this
format: Email Address you can be contacted by (Optional) Number of Invites Thing(s) you want in
return (Optional, this can include Riddle Answer, Posts on a forum, or quite simply, nothing. If
left blank, it will be assumed as nothing.) Any other information you might want (or need) to
include Also, when/if you no longer offer invites, please Edit your topic saying so. Now....
