Hey all! Just thought I'd ask everyone on the forum whether they use (or prefer to use) contact lenses or glasses. Here's my story - After discovering that I was near-sighted while taking a visual test for my driver's license, I went to the optometrist and bought my first pair of glasses. Since then, I've been wearing glasses (and going through several different frames) for about 15 years until I finally decided to wear soft contact lenses. Certainly, there are pros and cons to each. Glasses are (overall) less expensive since you only have to replace them every five years or so and they can protect your eyes from anything that may enter your eyes by accident. Not to mention that it's just easier to take your glasses on and off. Contact lenses can easily hide the fact that you have an eye problem, but they can get expensive in the long run - for example, cleaning fluid and always having to buy new (2-week) disposable soft lenses. The other disadvantage is that they're easy to lose. It's not so bad if you have 2-week or one-day lenses, but what if you lose your hard lenses? The other option, of course, is to get laser eye surgery (LASIK) and fix the problem forever. A friend of mine did this a few years ago and it worked out really well. So...Do you use contact lenses or glasses...or did you ditch both of them in favour of laser eye surgery?

Contact Lenses of course! I wore glassess for a few years. I was tired of having to push them up my nose every 5 minutes. When it was time to get a new prescription I tried contact lenses. It has been almost a year that I've had them and I love them!

Glasses, I have been wearing glasses for, umm, 15 years at least, and I have never even tried contacts. Then again I have some sever phobias reguarding my eyes and I have never even been able to use eye drops dispite pretty bad allergies that would benifit from the use of eye drops. I can't imagine putting contacts in, can't even watch someone else do it without wanting to throw up.

I have to admit I was a bit scared at first of putting contact lenses in my eyes. It was quite a task trying to prevent the eyelids from closing and putting the lens in at the same time. I persevered, though, and I know I can put them on without even thinking about it.

QUOTE(shigajet @ Jul 12 2005, 04:08 PM) So...Do you use contact lenses or glasses...or did you ditch both of them in favour of laser eye surgery? I dont used any of them, but my opinion I prefer contact lense than eye glass, the reason is one, you can change the color of your eyes to beautify it, red, blue, gree, black white etc... second, contact lenses protect your eyes from any harms, third makes you feel comfortable.

Laser Surgery is the best answer. I spent a couple of years wearing glasses. Hated them, made my nose sore, got broken alot because I was always a pretty active kid. So I switched to contact lenses. Way better than glasses. But they still had issues. Very irritating when they were dirty. The other issue with my contact lenses was that they block some oxygen from reaching your eyes. Over many years, this becomes an issue. The blood vessels in your eyes get larger to compensate for the lack of oxygen. This is not a reversible side effect. Once they become enlarged... this is permanent. Eventually, these blood vessels will expand into the retina causing blind spots and other issues. A few years ago, I spent $3500 for Laser Surgery. Very easy procedure, and very quick. A little freaky to have someone perform surgery on your eyes while you are awake, but not that bad. Before having the surgery, I always assumed that 20/20 was perfect vision. Believe it or not... it can be even better. I went from something like 20/200 vision in both eyes, to 20/15 vision in both eyes. I can see better than I ever did with either glasses or contacts, and my exams are free for the rest of my life. If I ever need an adjustment, it is also free. A few more years, and it will have paid for itself just in savings from eye exams and replacement prescriptions. Also, before the surgery, I was ineligable for any type of government Law Enforcement Positions due to vision requirements. Now I exceed their requirements, because they allow vision corrected by laser surgery. (this was the original reason why I got the surgery)

I've worn glasses and/or contacts most all my life. I have to say that I prefer wearing glasses over contacts anyday. I really don't like having to take care of the contacts they way they need to be, I have far better things to do with my time than make sure they stay clean, are replaced when needed, ect. Not to mention, they have always earritated my eyes to the point that I was constantly asked if I was high... Glasses on the other hand have a tendency to slip off of your nose, or scratch and you have to take them off when you come into a warm area after having been in a cold area for a while, cause they tend to fog up on you. You also have a tendency to fiddle with them in nervous situations, cleaning them and such... Wearing glasses can also show off a bit of your personality if you think about it. There are billions of styles to choose from for any one perscription and the one you choose is usually the one you like best...

I prefer glasses because I feel weird if I don't have some sort of glass on my eyes (regular glasses or sunglasses) and contact lenses just seemed to take more time than glasses.

Contacts, because I really don't like the way glasses look on me. I'd prefer neither, but contacts will do. Glasses make me look like a weird combination of punk and prep. I'm not into labels at all, but it would definately get to me if I had to wear glasses :\

If I would have to curry contact lenses or glasses so would I choose contact lenses, beacuse I think its more comfortable and you can do most thing with it as you would do without glasses. But first time I would use contact lenses would it be ingnoring I think. So my choice is contact lenses!

I wear glasses. And even, at first, I really hated them, they've become part of me. I now think I look weird without glasses. o.o Although, if someone offered me Contact Lenses for free, I'd take them. I wouldn't mind ditching my glasses for contact lenses every now and again, mainly because people seem to see me as a Computer Nerd, or a Geek. ;-;

A lot of people don't even know I wear contact lenses. I started wearing glasses way back in the days of elementary school. I hated them. They made me look dorky and nerdy but I was very much blind without them. In sophomore year of high school I made my advent with contact lenses. It was a step, especially with getting used to the routine of putting them in and taking them out, not to mention the eye-painful and frustrating hassles that you have with contact lenses from time to time. I still wear them to this day, prefering them to wearing glasses. I don't like glasses now not because of the dorky look (because people can actually look cuter, smarter, more chic, etc. with the right frames), but because of the fact that they fog up, and if you're stuck with a pair that doesn't fit you (military-issued "civilian" pair), they like to slide down your nose, you can break them, you can lose them, you can scratch them... the problems can be quite astounding and a bear to deal with. But then again, with contacts you HAVE to have saline solution, take them out and put them in often, and of course, buy lenses, which can add up to quite a bit in comparison to what you can get out of a pair of glasses... assuming your prescription doesn't change and you don't lose or break them. I think it's still a great thing to actually have both on hand, considering that I would like to be able to swap to glasses when I'm at home and not out and about trying to impress people with my mad-good looks. I've formed a bad habit of sleeping with my contacts in and it's not a good thing to be doing, but I still do it. Stupid, but when I go blind because of it, I have no one to blame but myself and my laziness. A lot of people that I know find it very iffy to even be touching the eye when putting in a contact lens, but I can actually do it naturally now. Just as long as I have saline solution (and sometimes not even), I can pop in my contacts anywhere at any time. But glasses win as far as simply slipping the pair on without much hassle. Hopefully in the future, I will have a good opportunity for LASIK just so I won't ever have to deal with it again. Edit: As far as LASIK goes, my dad had it done and he says that your eyes will feel wicked dry and even gritty at times. The surgery is done in stages and not all in one shot. The dry and gritty feeling is ameliorated by drops that your optometrist will provide you, which you will probably need to use for months up to a year after surgery is complete. The typical cost for laser eye surgery is $2000-$2500 (for both eyes, I believe), but if you're in the military, see about getting it for free by asking the optometry branch about what your options may be. (Combat arms branches always have priority, of course.)

I've been using glasses for about 1 year now and I dont really mind it at all it helps my vision and does not look all that bad. Never had contacts and the thought of sticking something on my eye just dosent go well with me. mariecon555 can you tell us abit more about that eye correction you had done? I'm thinking about it and would like to know any possible side effects it could have. thanks

Before I had my treatment with Dr. Wiles at Lasik-1, I had trouble seeing clearly even with my glasses on. Now I can see my alarm clock without holding it in front of my face and I can see road signs without squinting. I don’t hate driving at night anymore. My life is so much better now; I only wish I had gone to Lasik-1 sooner! Thank you for helping me see what I’ve been missing!"

Well, I have Hipermetropia (the contrary of yours), and I have always used glasses, some people exclaims "Oh, glasses make me look bad", but what you preffer, "looking bad" (baaah, it isn't that bad, you could buy yourself a nice glass in titanium, or something) or taking the risk of damaging your eyes with some kind of bad contact lensses, they evend tend more to eye infections. If you care about your eyes: glasses. If you don't want to have glasses on: contact lenses.
