So a friend of mine gives me his old laptop (an old dell latitude) that is not booting. So i do my usual geek thing: grab out the hard drive, backup the data, format and get ready to re-install windows 95 (yeah i said it was an OLD laptop). Now everything was going along, slowly but it was doing its thing. Now once the pc was ready i boot it to windows the first time, try using the trackball, nothing happens. So I look through the system properties and see the mouse is marked as not working. I try everything i can think of (installing different drivers, checking the BIOS, etc) and still no luck. I even tried going to google but didn't have any luck there either. So after days of going completely insane I happen to stumble across a secret menu hidden within the laptop (accessable by pressing something like Function + F2) which of course has an option to enable or disable the trackball (and all the power management features) now this solved my problem but brings to light the absolute stupidity of the person that designed this system, while it is nice to access these options while the computer is running, without knowing the menu is there (and with the lack of access to manuals and such due to it being a very old pc) you wouldn't have ever been able to get the trackball working. this is a menu that could have easily been added in the BIOS somewhere and saved me a bunch of hassle. anyway i'm going to stop typing about it or i'll get even more annoyed and end up blowing up dell computers

Hehe, ah man, this makes me paranoid. My Dell laptop stopped booting last summer, and I kinda.. took out the HD, made it into an external one with my "USB-on-a-rope"... and shoved the laptop in my desk. I'm finally going to take it apart and see what the deal is, tomorrow (I've had a busy year XD; ). This post doesnt make me feel very optimistic XD; Stupid laptops are such a pain to work on... I think I've been putting it off too long ^^;

Sounds much like the one I am typing this from now. I have a bit more space so I can run XP but there is always something wrong with this one. Worst of all though is my desktop computer though. At least you can do something about it... I don't know how to do those kind of things. Hope it all works out for you though in the end. Patience and Walmart might help. And if you start blowing up Dells, make sure you have someone there to tape the momentious occasion so you can watch it over and over for maximum enjoyment.

..figured out the problem on mine.. the monitor is a goner. I dont know if it's the LCD itself, or.. maybe a wire just broke somewhere in it. I wonder how much it'll cost to get this fixed... XD;

Computer Giveaway
Free laptop haha (9) okay here is my vent and I am very steamed over it. While I was doing some work around the house
and listening to the radio, they played a sales ad for a free laptop. You would think the station
being one of the bigger ones in the NY area that they would not sell ad's to anything "funny"
Well I went to the site today, and read all of the page. and then started to fill out the form.
Mistake! that's when things really got going. in about 3 mins I had a good 30 E mails
wanting me to Buy Buy Buy. So I stoped filling out the form, and then spent 3 hours going ....
Dell And Windows Vista
Man, am I annoyed! (8) Dell is making a big deal of their "We'll sell you an XP-loaded PC!" option. So, when Mom
was ready to buy a new computer earlier this week, I went to Dell's Web site to see about an
XP-based system. Mom wasn't ready to upgrade to Vista yet; she wanted to give that OS some time
first so that Microsoft could make it more stable, fix some bugs, et cetera. So when I could not
find any XP-based systems, I entered the live Q&A chat that Dell offers on the Web site. That's
where I found out that, if I want an XP system, I have to buy the 1,200-dollar XPS ....

My Poor Laptop

Computers And My School
Not a very good combination (21) My school has finally made me EXTREMELY mad! First of all, I need to explain sosme stuff:
Duriing this week (for three days, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) we had testing. We had to sign
up for after-testing activities (during those days, we did nothing after we tested). Well, the only
one I really wanted, was the Internet. I signed up for it on all three days. On my first day, I
did everything I always do when I get on a school computer: Stick in my flash drive, and launch
Portable Firefox (I'm not sparking a FF vs. IE conversation) because I hate IE. N....
Bsnl's Internet Connection
Frequent disconnections are pain! (1) This is my first ever Venting. Normally, I post in the vent..to actually calm down people or to give
them the solution(if there can be any). Well, BSNL is the biggest telecom company in India (B.S.N.L.
In INDIA Is like British Telecom in UK) and I've got an ADSL connection with them. The reason
for my anger is the frequent disconnection of the internet connection. It is so intermittent that it
disconnects almost 10 times in a span of 15 min.!(SAINT_MIKE KNOWS IT TOO!) I cant do any
thing properly on the internet..be it chat, email or what ever. I had to down....
Computers Hate Me Almost As Much As I Hate Them
Why do they always have to mess with me? (18) So, I'm sitting on my computer about a half hour ago when it decides to randomly shut off. So,
being as hot as it was in my computer room, I figured it just got too warm and shut itself off. Then
I start to smell burnt silicon. Anybody who has ever owned a computer and knows what that smell is,
dreads it. So I go into my roommate's room and he says to just let it sit and ventilate the
room. So I opened a window and took the side of the case off and left the room for 45 mins to go
clean the garage. By the time I came back everything inside the case was cool (enoug....

I Hate Computer Hardware!
Still i love computers... (6) Today, just 2 weeks before my planed total system upgrade my video card finally died (more of a coma
if you ask me). Of course it was an AGP one and my planed one would be PCIx, but I also planned to
sell it not for a few $. But as it seems fate has other planes for me. I'm now running on a
nvidia riva tnt2 32mb. I don't want to make any negative publicity for the company but I thought
Leadtek is one of the top companies. Anyway this wouldn't hate the hardware part so much if it
weren't the second time a componet dies when you need it more. Last year....
Not Knowing How You Did Something
Its annoying and its a pain! (4) Earlier today I was happily playing my online video game when all of the sudden my computer stopped
working. By that I mean that it froze and then completely stopped working. I tried a bunch of stuff
like taking out the battery, clearing the CMOS, putting in the original motherboard floppy disk, and
just leaving it off. Later this morning I turned it on and it just started working. I just can not
stand when you do something and can not do it again. At least my computer is working again

My Domain Nightmare
4 weeks of website pain ! (5) I am so tired of all the hosting/domain nonsense in my life. For over 4 weeks now my site has been
down. Initially i changed hosts cause my old provider was putting to many advertisments. Ever since
my problems have grown exponentially ! I have changed 3 hosts in the last 4 weeks and finally
settled down at trap17. But this was not the end. I had to change hosts cause they either were
providing less then what they promised or they shut down like spotquick. I having been using uni.cc
domain for so long now ever since they launched. Now for some reason even after p....
