Microsoft is improving its existing services like e-mail and IM to catch-up the competition. Apart from that Microsoft is working on a concept to unify all the services it offers onto one platform called the Windows Live Core, codenamed Cloud OS.

Cloud OS will run web-based applications like Microsoft's Live Service to unify platforms from Windows on PC to the XBox platform to Windows Mobile. Users will be able to access their data from any platform as it will be stored online. If you take a photograph using your Windows Mobile powered phone, you'll be able to access it seamlessly on a PC, or save game related notes from your XBox and access them on the move from your mobile phone. Microsoft is solidifying its stance by launching two new Live services, one for storing and sharing photos online and another for storage of any kind of file.

Still there is no confirmation regarding the exact nature of the end product but is the Microsoft’s way heading towards getting its place on the web as it does on the Desktop.

Microsoft seems determined to get the same respect in the online world as it enjoys on the desktop world. And Google has everything in BETA. Both have huge resources. This battle is a long one. Both parties will make their moves. Let's see how the story unfolds.

With the deployment of Web 2.0 it is more clear then ever that the future of the computers are all about being online. To me there won't be regular desktops as we have today instead in a more sophisticated form of client-server achitecture we will have online desktops which will be reachable by logging in from anywhere.

With wireless (wimax etc.) we will be connected all the time. Microsoft sees that of course. Our future OSs will also work online and we will just login to our servers from anywhere to reach our own desktops.

Macbook air might be the front runner in the area showing how important being wirelessly connected is.

The future might change our understanding of computers dramatically.
