The only way to change the basic system icons, as in the favorites, folders, and those things that come with XP, is by installing a theme. You can also install each one by one, which is a big chore. The other option is to really install a theme that changes the layout XP to look like Vista, some of them work, but not all of them, look them up and see which one you like the best. You can't change them all with one click, unless you change the system32 folder, and delete them and replace with Vista icons with the same name, but that requires significant knowledge and if it doesn't work then you have a problem. Just replace one by one or install a theme, don't mess around with that though.

As you told, to install vista theme in xp, we have to patch some Xp system files which cause the xp disorder. I want to change only icons. Have you any idea about install vista theme without patching xp.

If you wanted to customize your icons, you can try IcoFX. It's a free program to create your own icons.

How To Change Xp Icon - Complete System Icon
How To Change Xp Icon
If you want to change the default icons in windows XP, you have to use any resource editors (I'm using ResHacker-a free software)
Most of the XP icons are located in %systemroot%\system32\shell32.Dll
To change the My Computer icon -> edit the %systemroot%\explorer.Exe
To change the My Documents icon -> edit the %systemroot%\system32\mydocs.Dll
If you like, I can give the already edited shells to make your XP like Vista or Windows 7.

I have been looking on the web for the last 2 days about vista default icons. I have to say your suggestion on XP icons is one of the best I have read. Most either are full of usless jibber or offer a 3rd party software. Not to often I actually see a real answer.

Giving XP the Vista look -- Changing the icons and much more!!
How To Change Xp Icon
I am sorry folks I am posting this again as I had posted this from a wrong email address...Lol my fault...
Ok so you want to edit the whole icons for XP. So here we go...
1)First of all download a software called IconTweaker which is a freeware. You will get it here...
2)Next, download vista icons or vista iconpack. You can get it yurself. Alternatively, you can get it from http://www.Vistaicons.Com/icon/i91s0/ivista_icon_pack.Htm or from http://sagorpirbd.Deviantart.Com/art/Vista-Icons-For-XP-78814967
3)Next step is to set up the icons for my computer, my docs etc. In icon tweaker by clicking the iT button (or you may call it a tab)
4)When you are done, simply apply all your changes.
5)You will have all your icons changed!
***6) [This step is optional but may be useful to you]
Now that you want a vista look to your icons, I think that you may also want the system tray icons to be changed as well...For this you need to use ResHack or ResEdit which is a very complicated process...But our friend has DopeySneezy from deviantart has done this very easy for us. Now you don't need to use ResHack or ResEdit at all! Simply download the system tray icons from http://dopeysneezy.Deviantart.Com/art/Windows-7-System-Tray-for-XP-115205461 . Now you will say these are win7 icons and not win vista...But they are almost the same as vista! Also they are better looking as well. Ok after downloading these...Extract them using WinRar or 7-zip and then restart your xp in safe mode. (press f5 during windows startup and you will get the messages and styles for starting windows. Choose "safe mode without networking " and then proceed by pressing enter) Once windows has loaded in safe mode...You will not observe the eye candy features of xp ( those features don't work in safe mode at all so your xp will look kind of dull ). Ok now back to the point. In the files that you had extracted, copy netshell.Dll and stopobject.Dll and paste it in C:\Windows\system32
You will be asked if you want to replace the existing file. Click yes...(but I do reccomend that you take a backup of those first and then replace them.
Thats it! Restart your system and enjoy the vista eye candy on xp!!
****7) [Another optional step but you will enjoy it as it gives xp almost the same look as vista. You will not be able to differentiate between them anymore] Download Vistart and Viorb from http://lee-soft.Com and run them. You will observe their system tray icons in the left of your taskbar in the system tray. Right click the vistart icon in sys tray and then go to options. Check the start with windows options and then click ok. Do the same with viorb...You will not see viorb icon in system tray, right click the orb instead and then click start with windows. Before starting up viorb I will request you to download the vista vg theme from http://blog.Shankarganesh.Com/2007/07/29/3-windows-vista-themes-for-windows-xp/ as it works best with this theme only... Please note that to run this theme, your uxteme.Dll must be patched. If its not you can download uxthememultipatcher from http://www.Softpedia.Com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/UXTheme-MultiPatcher.Shtml and then enjoy this theme. ( Vistart is the Vista start menu for xp, Viorb is the Vista start button for xp and it works with all themes but goes best with vista themes only as it will look pathetic if you will use the vista start button with xp default themes like xp blue, green or silver )
(Now you must be wondering that why I had asked you to restart the system in safe mode. Here is the answer to that question. When Windows is running in its normal mode, then a service called Windows File Protection Service is running in background which can't be stopped and this does not allow you to replace the dlls which I just taught you how to replace. It will replace them for the time-being, but the original dll files will be restored when windows reboots so you will not observe any change bcoz the change takes place only when you reboot the system. You can use a freeware called replacer to replace these files when windows is running in normal mode...It stops the windows file protection service, but it is too complicated for a layman. And therefore, I told you to start up your system in safe mode as in safe mode, the WFP service is switched off and you can replace the dll files and there will be no restoration of the original dlls when you restart your pc)

My system is a pentium 4

will this change harm my system ?
is my system competent to handle win7 or the harware requirement increases for Win7 ?
Thank you.

Well, but it'll be a hassle to change everything. To change my computer, etc icons, just right click your desktop, Propreties, Desktop, Settings (or icons, idk I don't use XP anymore) and then you can download or make an icon pack, put the images on the folder/place and start replacing. I just warn you, changing everything manually will be a waste of time.
