Well plugin's aside it would seem that GStreamer has always been bad, especially in the codec department. It would seem that the codecs that are package with GStreamer are horrible and this one article I found and it would seem that VLC Media Player is the way to go to solve your video problems. So check out this article and get a perspective on how to solve your problem....

Can't Play Videos On Ubuntu 8.10 In Any Player

miladinoski
Trap17 Free Web Hosting, No AdsI have an irritating problem here. I can't play any video (like .avi .mov and so on) in any player (mplayer, totem, vlc etc.) on Ubuntu 8.10 because of some error about GStreamer which you can see on the left about the 'GStreamer element volume plugin' which wasn't installed on the Totem player.

I haven't had any luck in finding a solution to this very irritating problem while searching on Google so I'm looking for help from the Linux users out here in Trap17 biggrin.gif

I tried removing everything GStreamer connected with searching in Synaptic and then reinstalling it and that didn't help at all. mad.gif

Try installing the following packages if they are not yet installed:
QUOTE
  • gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-base
  • gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
  • gstreamer0.10-alsa
  • gstreamer0.10-audiosink

Failing that, run Totem from the command line and see if you get a more useful error from the console when you try to play a video.

You can also try the following. Navigate to $HOME/.gstreamer-0.X/ and delete all the registry.*.xml files. Then open the console and run sudo gst-inspect.

That's too funny... let me explain...

I had a somewhat similar issue under Ubuntu 8.04 where the flash in my Browsers would not play. Upon upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10, they now all work, so possibly rvalkass' suggestion might fix it for you.

Linux in general is notorious at having trouble playing media files of almost every type, in particular movies. Once you've gotten past the hurdle, though, you'll find it well worth it. You'll pull your hair out trying to get the thing to work, throw a few tantrums, then suddenly...*ding* Everything pops in to place, works like a charm and plays everything. Seriously.

On a different note, I often find it worthwhile to start from scratch. Uninstall everything, then build it up from the ground up. While I've no experience with Ubuntu, I'd imagine it has a package system similar to Fedora's. If so, following the advice given by rvalkass is definitely worthwhile. smile.gif

After doing what rvalkass suggested (removing the .xml files — there was only one such file in that folder in my case) I get this in the console when I try to play some video in Totem:

Drat...alright, so new question: have you ever managed to get videos and the like playing on that particular machine at all? Have you recently installed Ubuntu, and are trying to get videos to play for the first time? Do you use Ubuntu (or any other form of Linux) on any other machine?

While I'm at it, I assume you've made sure to try to update all of your packages? I'll let someone far more versed in Linux answer the problem, but I'm more than happy to try and get some more information for them to go on. wink.gif

Of course they did play, if they didn't the problem would have been of another type, don't you think wink.gif

Actually I installed Ubuntu in December 2007 and constantly upgraded the distro, from 7.10 to 8.04 and now on 8.10 because I couldn't do a fresh install because of my broken CD-rom (oh and the BIOS doesn't support booting from USB either). I don't use Ubuntu on any other machine as I don't have a Ubuntu capable PC at home sad.gif

Yes, I have this problem for almost 2-3 weeks but I decided to get help now because I must see couple of clips that aren't available on the web...

Eitherways, thanks for your pleasant help! smile.gif

Have you installed the restricted extras package(s)? That's what i do when i want to play DVDs, Quicktime, MP3s, etc.

You could probably do a poor-man's install. It may require a separate partition, though; it's been a while since i attempted one, though i never succeeded.

Try also,
CONSOLE
sudo apt-get install apt-file

Follow the last printed statement on how to update the cache for apt-file, then do
CONSOLE
apt-file search libgstvolume.so

After installing apt-file and doing what it suggested to me (updating the cache), I get this (I know the errors aren't connected to my problem — don't worry):
CONSOLE
whiteeagle@whiteeagle-laptop:~/.gstreamer-0.10$ sudo apt-file update
[sudo] password for whiteeagle:
Can't get http://apt.boxee.tv/dists/hardy/Contents-i386.gz

I guess this wasn't a problem solver (because I still can't play any video in Ubuntu) but it helped you resolve what's wrong, right? I hope so wink.gif
About the poor-man's install, I don't know how to do that (for Ubuntu), I need a tutorial or something because the results on Google weren't clear enough ... unsure.gif

You said Mplayer and others don't play videos as well. I don't think Mplayer uses gstreamer, so if it can't play in there and other media players that don't use gstreamer, then the problem should be somewhere else. If you could provide the output of Mplayer when trying to play a video, it might provide more insight.

Well plugin's aside it would seem that GStreamer has always been bad, especially in the codec department. It would seem that the codecs that are package with GStreamer are horrible and this one article I found and it would seem that VLC Media Player is the way to go to solve your video problems. So check out this article and get a perspective on how to solve your problem.

Glad you've got it working biggrin.gif

As a matter of interest, the plugin problems appear to stem from the gstreamer0.10-plugins-base package. Make sure it is actually installed, then check the paths given by the apt-file command and make sure the files are actually there.

I found a solution!

You know, if I played the file with mplayer through the command line — only the sound would play (and vlc didn't play anything), but I discovered gmplayer (GUI for mplayer) and it did play the file perfectly with both sound and great framerate. I don't know what the problem is, but I'm content that I found a way to go over it! xd.gif
