First you must be more specific.

And now. YES!, You can make money from forums, but not enough to maintain a solid life with a head above your heels. And one more thing, People won't donate unless there is a reason, For example Server Costs. You might not get that many donations if you just say " If you liked this site please donate". And anyway if you had a certain reason you would have to put up more money to pay for that Certain reason. A good forum software would be AEF located at Electron Home Page. You can earn money from a forum only if you have all the following right,

* Right Forum package like IPB, vBulletin, wBB, phpBB, AEF
* Right Topics , better if there are a few forums on the topics you've chosen
* Right method for earning, formulate an income strategy like advertising etc. so that you can have a steady flow of income.
* Keep you users online and more active in your forums
* Make your forum attractive with great offers, features, good content and constant moderation to keep off spam.
