First up, the thought of going in for ipod rather than an ordinary mp3 player, is a great decision. I ahve got a basic IPod shuffle,
and really do not find it sufficient. So, i would suggest you to go for atleast the 4 GB model. I have heard that Microsoft has also released a ipod like device. Maybe, you should get to know about that device too . See what that gadget has to offer you, and decide between the Microsoft's mp3 player and IPod .

Microsoft's mp3 player is called the Zune. From what i have heard it isn't doing as well as they thought it would. It has a lot more features than the ipod but the main color is brown and it doesn't look good apparently. But it has a wifi internet connection i think and a lot more cool features. But i would recommended a 30gb ipod if you like movies and music.

Well, it all depends on what you want. If you want something to just listen to music. Then go for the iPod Nano. If you would like to listen to music and watch movies, and videos the iPod video would be the best. Now for the amount of videos or music you want to be able to have on your iPod is another factor. There are a 2, 4, and 8 gig nanos for the new nano. For the iPod video i think there are 30 and 60 gigs. There are also many different colors so that is another thing that you will have to decide on. Personally, i use the blue, 4 gig iPod Nano. I really like it and it works just fine. So basically it all depends on what you want and what you like. Hope this helped you out.

Personally, I have an iPod Shuffle (the older version, which is the same size as a packet of chewing gum and can double as a regular USB memory stick to store data files.) and I'm pretty satisfied with it since I rarely fill the entire device with songs and I change the playlist frequently. The nanos are nice, but I like simplicity and a Shuffle suits me nicely. Depends on what you want, really.

I would NOT buy an iPOD. Because the software you get with the iPOD is NOT user friendly. My sister she got one after 5 months all buttons didnt work suddenly, they got blocked or something like that. Now she use's it as an USB storage device.

I think it all really depends on what you're going to need in an MP3 player. I just got my 4GB red iPod a few months ago, and I'm pretty satisfied with it, although at the beginning putting on music was a real pain. They didn't include any real in-depth info on how to upload my music, only that I had to have iTunes and I could choose to sync all my music on it, but I only wanted to put on the songs of bands I currently liked; not the old ones from months ago. Once I figured it all out it was good though.

All I can really say to you is that the shuffle is good for if you don't really care all that much about selection. The nano is like a normal MP3 player, except with more fun add-ons (games, photos, notes, etc.) and can hold a lot of music. If you're interested in videos then consider a 30/80GB iPod video, pretty much like a nano I suppose but with the ability to play movies and stuff, although a bit chunkier than a nano, so don't expect to put it in your pocket.

i would recommend an 4gb or 8gb to an average music listener. But if you would be interested in watching videos and listen to a lot of music then i would defeintly say at least a 30gb if not 80 gb.

Eh I wouldn't say that you have to buy iPod I would say instead buy some good mp3 player. They are really better today then few years back.

Let's see why mp3's are better then iPod:
1. They are cheaper then iPod's
2. You don't need any additional software to connect them to the computer and transfer files to it.
3. If you like to do this with software then you can do it with any free software which is nicely done like winamp or even Windows media player. here is even addon for the firefox and thunderbird
4. They can play wider varaity of files

I cannot remember any more reasons but here are few which are the same as iPod:
1. There are mp3's who look the same as ipod and even better and more stylish
2. They can produce the same or better sound quality it depends now days more on the headphones you are using then on the player itself
3. They are usually more robust in their design
4. There are those equal to the iPod memory size

OK here is only one advantage of the ipod to the mp3 player and this is only one I can remember it is that they have wide varaity of extensions.

I own an ipod for a couple of years now. It's one of those sixth generation ones that doesn't have video but it works for me. I just need music and some space for storage. I like the IPOD because its a music player, image storage, and anything else storage. Its like my huge mini usb drive. haha. Its has its problems sometimes. I have had to bang it a couple of times and be really abusive. Its working now thank goodness. One thing i do recommend is buying insurance for the thing because your bound to drop it and scratch it or somethings going to happen to it.
