Well all is said an done i don't think Blu Ray will win. Whenever Sony brings out their own brand it looks good at first but always end up loosing. I also think that for the next few years DVD's are going to be number 1. There are so many people that have DVD's that aren't going to want to start a new collection of Blu Rays or HD DVD's. Look at how long VHS has lasted and people are still buying them. Unless the Blu Ray and HD DVD players have a big drop in price, I would think DVD's are going to last for a while.
Sony invented the 3.5-inch floppy disks (according to this Wikipedia article) and they continued to dominate the market until the floppy disc was obsolete. Which proves your statment
QUOTE
Whenever Sony brings out their own brand it looks good at first but always end up loosing.
This little 'war' can easily be summed up. Blu-Ray will most likely win. It's the same old story as VHS Tapes and Records as well as Cassette Tapes and Floppy Disks(3 1/2 and 5 1/2 inch). We've all watched as the older technologies get phased out of the mainstream and newer ones simply replace them. As they become in higher demand they become produced at a higher rate, ergo the price drops on the media and the player as well as other related technologies. CDs and DVDs will be phased out eventually by Blu-Ray and other future technologies. So why worry about it? Don't. You'll save yourself a lot of hassle. Just go with the flow and let technology grow. I still can't wait until we have little 3 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch octagon disks that could store gigs upon gigs of information if configured correctly. The need for easy mass storage media is growing, even normal consumers who don't need it want it.
Well seeing as the two of the competitors for video game consoles chose one each, i personally feel that the overall success (aslthough there are many that will buy the other) will be with the PS3 as the quality of the Blu Ray discs are much better than those of the HD-DVD.
I think that Blu-Ray is not going to last. For those of you that remember Beta-Max, it was the same thing as this, but on VHS. It had a horrible loss. Some movie developers began making Blu-Ray discs, but they have halted that due to them not selling. I know my Best Buy and Wal-Mart have opted not to sell them because they are losing money. Nobody is going to pay 600+ for a format that will die soon and all it has to offer is PS3.
Here it is, the new BLU-RAY disc, the next generation of optical media that should replace DVD's on the market. Some movies are already being sold at DVD and BLU-RAY format, although prices here in Europe still are around 300€ to 500€ for a table BLUE-RAY reader, more or less the same a DVD player costed when it arrived at the market. Some laptops are coming with BLUE-RAY too although they cost around the same amount.
I would like to hear your opinion about this new technology and for those who don't know it yet here I post a link for your information:
The thing about the Blue Ray is that there is still some time before it gets popular and cost friendly. I dont doubt that Blue Rays are gonna be popular but they wont be popular with common people, more like people who need to transfer a lot of data at one shot.
I would still use DVD's though and it has a lot of space so I guess one Blue Ray would be sufficient
What I think is that a Blue Ray and a DVD will both survive and it will take a heck lot of time before they get popular.
Blue-Ray discs require a blue laser to get the info....A red laser beam is too large to read the pits and convert them into usable data...Blue lasers have tighter, smaller beams and wavelengths so that's also why they can pack more data onto the same sized disc....
Now the older DVD that use the red laser, their pits are large enough for the Blue-Ray laser to read them too....
So a Blue Ray can read both, but an older DVD player can only do the older DVD because they use a Red laser in them.

The marvels of technology surprise me to this day. Like my new MP3 player for example. It's a 1
gig, and it's smaller than my index finger. Or my newest phone, is like half the size of my old
one, with a camera, more features, and four times as much space for downloads. iPods are mildly
annoying in their marvel. They're tiny, but hold so many songs. Like the iPod nano, which holds
1, 2, 4 or 8 gigs depending on the generation. The marvels of technology amaze me. It makes me feel
old not just to remember cassette tapes, but to own a cassette player and cassett....
Nikola Tesla was one extraordinary man. The city of Buffalo was once his play ground for his ideas.
But due to many undocumented feuds with Edison (yes the very one) Tesla's contribution to
electricity world went less than well notice... that is until now. Tesla worked on transmitting
mass volts across the distance without the aid of clumsy wires. Let's face it, the power poles
and loosely hung black wires across your block are just an eye sore. But Tesla's methods were
quickly overshadowed by Edison's quick and easy solution--run wire grids to provide e....

Hey guys have you heard about OLED? Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology An OLED is
an electronic device made by placing a series of organic thin films between two conductors. When
electrical current is applied, a bright light is emitted. This process is called
electrophosphorescence. Even with the layered system, these systems are very thin, usually less than
500 nm (0.5 thousandths of a millimeter). When used to produce displays, OLED technology
produces self-luminous displays that do not require backlighting. These properties result in thin,
