Blu-ray - News and considerations about this new technology

blackrabit
Here it is, the new BLU-RAY disc, the next generation of optical media that should replace DVD's on the market.
Some movies are already being sold at DVD and BLU-RAY format, although prices here in Europe still are around 300€ to 500€ for a table BLUE-RAY reader, more or less the same a DVD player costed when it arrived at the market. Some laptops are coming with BLUE-RAY too although they cost around the same amount.

I would like to hear your opinion about this new technology and for those who don't know it yet here I post a link for your information:

I'm not personally going to jump on that bandwagon for another year or two most likely. The war isn't over yet, just because Blu-Ray sounds much cooler and has Sony behind it doesn't mean it's a done deal. There are many many HD-DVD players and titles out and more are coming out all the time. This is a replay of the VHS tape wars of 20 years ago, give or take, where the superior format, beta-max, ended up loosing. I don't know which is the superior format in this case, but it seems as though I'd read somewhere that HD-DVD actually holds more information on thier discs. In any case, with Apple and Sony and many others firmly backing Blu-Ray, it's probably going to win, but I wouldn't take it to the bank just yet.

Well if you read some articles posted all around the internet you can see BLU-RAY is the superior format (as you called), it has protection against scratches and humidity while HD DVD doesn't, and you are wrong about which holds more data, BLU-RAY is the one that has a bigger capacity, but it costs a little bit more.
I will not take a side in this fight either, at least for now, although I bet in BLU-RAY.
The price is still too high, and some major brands are still to decide which side to take part of.

Well, I personally think that Blu-Ray will win. But the first Blu-Ray player arrived in europe 23. march, PlayStation 3. Blu-Ray holds more data but you need fully HD TV to watch it in best resolution, both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. They are very expensive, atleast at Iceland.

I don't think the DVD will last much longer, but I'm going to use the DVD as long as I can since the Blu-Ray appears to be the better disc. I just don't feel like paying the extra money for the Blu-Ray.

Guys, look at the cost of the Blue-Ray drive and the medias, they are far expensive than the DVD's,

technically, it sounds 1 BRD = 30 CD's = 5 DVD's
economically, it sounds cost of 1 BRD = cost of 100 CD's = cost of 50 DVD's

Hope, I'm proving still the DVD's are still cheaper, in-spite of lower capacity as compared with BR-Disc! tongue.gif

Completly opposite of you, I am jumping o nthe bandwagon. It seems like that blu ray is the next generation of disc quality if u have ever used blu ray deisc then you will have noticed that the wuality is much better than dvds. And the sou nd is to. Especially if you have HD then yo uwill like how picture perfect everything is. It really is worth the price you have to payu for it. Sure maybe 80 some dollars may seem like it is a lot when you are actually going to gain back the money after you see the picture and such things. So really this is really a great deal just because blu ray shows how far technology has gone in the past few years alone.

war on blu-ray and HD DVD is hampering the users. so why they can't have the standard for DVD also?

I am going to say that Blue-Ray will win the "battle of the formats", though I doubt many people are going to go buy the disc readers/writers or specifically buy hardware because it is Blue-Ray compatible, the main reason being that it is expensive, the discs are expensive around NZ$30 and that most major companies will be sticking with CD/DVD for a couple of years before moving onto Blue-Ray.

Well all is said an done i don't think Blu Ray will win. Whenever Sony brings out their own brand it looks good at first but always end up loosing. I also think that for the next few years DVD's are going to be number 1. There are so many people that have DVD's that aren't going to want to start a new collection of Blu Rays or HD DVD's. Look at how long VHS has lasted and people are still buying them. Unless the Blu Ray and HD DVD players have a big drop in price, I would think DVD's are going to last for a while.

blu ray is more advanced than DVD....
but we need a blue laser to read...

I, myself have a PS3, so if I ever have the need for Blue-Ray, there's another use for my 600GB PS3! laugh.gif (Too bad I can't use that 600GB and add that on to my 400 GB Computer, for a grand total of 1 Terabyte xd.gif)
The problem is, Blue Ray is kinda expensive though. Many people will not want to pay that kind of a price for one disk. And the system itself costs more than a 600GB PS3, so.. rolleyes.gif Hey, since sinthetix brought it up, I will probably still use some of the old stuff, like VHS Tapes and Records as well as Cassette Tapes and Floppy Disks(3 1/2 and 5 1/2 inch). blush.gif

Also, thanks for that Wiki and Blog article. I never really knew that much about Blue-Ray, just what was in the PS3 Box. wink.gif

well, for me its not as if i have jumped on the blue ray bandwagon, but i do have a ps3 so i wouldnt mind it too much if blue ray won out in the end biggrin.gif At any rate i am interested to see where this battle is headed. oh and thanks for that description nirmaldaniel very basic, yet very effective

Blue-Ray discs require a blue laser to get the info....A red laser beam is too large to read the pits and convert them into usable data...Blue lasers have tighter, smaller beams and wavelengths so that's also why they can pack more data onto the same sized disc....

Now the older DVD that use the red laser, their pits are large enough for the Blue-Ray laser to read them too....

So a Blue Ray can read both, but an older DVD player can only do the older DVD because they use a Red laser in them.
