I think that Fedora Core 2 is best free distribution now. It's a legacy of Red Hat. Try it.

Please note: FreeBSD, OpenBSD ARE NOT LINUX!!

I like SuSE, Knoppix and Yoper

I prefer SuSE for ease of use. YaST is very powerful. If you don't mind a command line installation give Gentoo a try. It is extremely efficient.

Did you say Fedora is for beginners ?????? I beg to differ here.. Even though Fedora rose out of a Redhat backed community-based project - it is not at all meant for the beginners.. Mandrake, Slackware, Ubuntu and even Gentoo are the ones which infact new users should start with.. Fedora has carved a separate niche for itself among the linux distros by its own right. In fact, the coding and features are so good that it's only comparable to the Redhat Enterprise Server series of Linux..no less.. It's as good at handling servers as the RHEL's are, if not more... I've been using it alongwith RHEL for quite a while on my company servers and I'm thoroughly impressed at its performance, even though I'm using FC2 (The kernel of FC2 is thoroughly optimized for networked rdbms systems). Eagerly waiting to get my hands on a copy of Fedora Core 3.

I read through all these discussions on the best linux distro.. If you want to view the most comprehensive list of linux distro's in the market and read loads of reviews on them - goto: DistroWatch.Org - that's the site to be in for all linux users out there... Also check out my other post on Ubuntu Linux - they're giving away absolutely free copies of their distro on CDs including free shipping...

Can't find an edit button... must be blind...

Seriously though, I've heard both Suse and Gentoo are good, I'd love to give them a try... *wants more computers* *wait a minute, I see a mandrake installation... die*

Gentoo is easy for beginners? You must be kidding me. It's a distro aimed at experts. It has no installation interface and it requires you to compile the Linux with the available packages. or use ebuild to install stuff into the kernel.

I can't even figure out how to compile Gentoo. I have used Linux for at least a year or 2.

Hi, When I get my new computer soon I wan't to get XP, however, I also want to have Linux since

Hello everyone! Ive tried one or two linux distros on my laptops but always the same snag...

  4. Who Uses Gentoo Linux Distro
    (4)
Just curious, how many Gentoo Linux'ers out there? I plan on switching over to Gentoo in a few
days (once new harddrive arrives). I still wanted my windows for games (LAN parties, just having
fun in general) so I just bought a second harddrive and an external enclosure. Gentoo will be my
main system, but ill have my other harddrive with windows on it whenever i feel like booting up
windows for some high quality gaming time. I used gentoo on an old laptop of mine with an install a
year ago or so, and so far its been my favorite distro Ive found. I dont really lik....

    (70)
I've just recently tried linux and I must say I"m really impressed with the new KDE and Gnome
environments, as well as the shere number of OSS available. I'm really excited about devling
deeper into this more stable and efficient OS; This coming from a windows user since it's dawn.
I've started with Gentoo 2006.0 to get my feet wet, and I'm planning to grab the new Fedora
Core 5 when I get a chance (as well as more cd's/dvd's) - it was recommended to me.
Anyways, what linux flavor do you prefer and why ? ....

Hey. I have started using linux early this year, and I love it. I use Ubuntu 5.04 (yeah, i know,
the noob distro) but I installed KDE on it. Not exactly Kubuntu, but I think it is better like this
because I have all of both the Ubuntu applications and the optional Kubuntu ones. I tried Red Hat a

Linspire/Lindows. This is not absolutly neccessary but can I have it without being overpacked with

I was just wondering what people's concensus was about this. What is the best distro for a web
server, and why? I have heard people rave about Debian's stability. What about others? What
about desktops? SuSE is looking really good these days, but I haven't anything other than SuSE,
