I'm not muc of a security guy. I'm not a guy who knows how to test AVs but if I was the one compiling the list Kaspersky would sit on top of the list UNRIVALLED. I have more that a dozen PCs on a LAN, with different AVs and my experience has taught me that:
McAfee can be easily disabled by malware. I see the red sign(On access scan disabled) more than 7 times a day and God knows how many viruses will be hitting me when I'm in that state.
Symatec doesn't have most of the definitions u'll b expecting. I remember when I was hit by Kibaki(kebtos), symantec could not detect anything and their site had nothing on the little devil. I had YahLover on all my removables but I could only see it on machines running McAfee, despite updating symantec everyday(this I think does not work coz I believe they only update once a week).
AVG is good but does not detect some of the things Kaspersky detects. I had probles with AVG 8's firewall. I could not access network folders or Remote Desktop my computer with the AVG firewall on. Of cause I believe there is a way to get around the problem but the fact that it's not obvious turns me off. I have since reverted to AVG 7.5
I'm not the perfect gy to listen to coz I havent tried the other packages but I just thought i should share what I have experienced.
I have seen many antivirus software "solutions" running on and ruining Windows-based PCs. The fact is that most antivirus are so heavy that, even if they succeed in protecting the computers where they are installed, they sensibly slow down their performance.
With that in mind, I think that one of the best antivirus around is still NOD32 by ESET. It's really light and fast, their updates are frequent and incremental, and it has the highest detection rate I have seen.
I am not related to ESET in any way. I am just saying what I have seen through my own eyes.
Of course, there is no such thing as an unbeatable antivirus. It also helps to have what I call a "defensive computer policy", which includes browsing only trusted websites, opening only safe files, etc. But NOD32 would be my choice if I ever needed an antivirus.
Interesting posts. I too am not the keen on virus stuff but i suppose it all has to be done.
The thing is it costs so much unless you can find a decent free one.
Most of my mates use AVG and thats it. I have norton and it plays me about a little.
Is AVG any good ?
Yes, AVG is good. But IMHO Avast is even better. And it's free for personal and non-comercial users. You only have to register online (it's quick and painless as far as I can remember).
It's only weak point is that it feels a little bit heavy on slow systems. But in most modern computers (1 Ghz+, 512Mb+) it should feel just fine.
I'm no expert either but in my experience I think Zone Alarm, Kaspersky, Avast, and others are the best. They aren't overloaded on system resources, and have good decetion rates, plus the scan speed isn't that bad.
I've used Mcafee before... It was horrible. All it ever found were a few cookies. It was heavy on sytem resources. I just didn't feel safe using it.
Norton was also bad. Never detected anything. I don't reccomend it.
I've used Trend Micro before, It came with my new PC, but I instantly uninstalled it because I had already had a security suite from my past computer.
i already tried looking this up on the internet but to no avail since most of the literature there
seems to be outdated. A lot of the literature i read after googling "iexplore.exe virus" says that
it can be a virus if it's not run from the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\
folder. What's happening to my system is that iexplore.exe runs from that folder however, it
does so when internet explorer is not actually running! Furthermore, i have a new process
running in my processes list, rundll32.exe. I know this for a fact because I actually....
Just installed Linux Ubuntu on a partition with Wireless access to the Internet and have a question
about the need for an Ani-virus software. Is it suggested to have it installed? and which one is
recommended by the Trap17 users? Ubuntu 8.04 installed via Wubi, if that matters. Both the LAN
hard-wire connection and the Wireless Adapter work, if that matters.......
Hello, I was wondering if anybody knew of a good free lightweight antivirus program, as I just got
an internet connection on my slower computer. The computer itself can hardly be called
internet-ready, it's over 10 years old, but it still works fine, the problem is I'm worried
that an antivirus program would slow it down too much. (I have Norton Antivirus and Firewall on my
other computer, which is much faster, and it slows down the computer a lot, especially booting. I
kinda want this computer to be usable online.) I know that there are some great programs out ....

Hi Guys, Lately I have had this same annoying pop-up dialog box pop up that says: QUOTE NOTICE:

A dangerous virus spreading life-threatening infections is killing more people in United States each
year than AIDS virus. This was stated in an article by the Associated Press. According to the
Associated Press nearly 90,000 Americans get affected each year from a drug-resistant staph germ. 46
out of 1000 US nursing home and hospital patients are affected. Most staph cases tend to be
relatively mild skin infections, but invasive infections that enter the bloodstream can easily
become deadly. The apparent use of antibiotics has greatly limited the effectiveness of the c....

QUOTE It seems that Microsoft has started flagging Gmail as a virus in their virus scanning
software Windows Live OneCare. Many people are reporting that every time they open Gmail, a warning
is displayed telling the user they are infected with "BAT/BWG.A". Now, either Gmail is a virus, or
Microsoft is generating false positives. Some affected by this "virus" say other anti-virus products
do not pick up the infection — to me, this is a bit suspicious. So who should be responsible for
fixing the problem? Either Google can wait for Microsoft to update their virus def....

Hold your horses folks - this might be one of the ultimate scientific breakthroughs in recent times.
All the so called "cures" for AIDS so far have been nothing but retroviral agents (cocktails of
several expensive drugs) - that only served to inhibit the AIDS virus. None were able to purge them
from your body for good. They could only limit the activity of the virus allowing you to lead a
normal (almost) life till the end. But with this new report in the Salt Lake Tribune, it seems Paul
D. Savage of Brigham Young University has invented a compound that actually HUNTS D....

I found out that AVG Free version isn't eliminating even trojan viruses. I only have this free
version from protecting my system. Is it okay to install one more anti-virus software on top of this
AVG Free version which is already installed and updated to the latest version? I have the option of
installing Norton Anti-virus 2005. Will it cause any problem since the two softwares may use the
same source from the computer, if I install this one? Do you recommend that I should uninstall

I was online, and then a friend sent me that file, and I accepted it because he's been wanting
to send me a program that improves the resolution of the screen. But then my email address was in
the file name, so I asked him what that was. To my horror, he said 'virus', but it was too
late, I already opened it and then several chat screens popped-up, and it was auto-sent to some of
the friends on the contact list. Luckily i was quick enough to ask them not to click on it. And my
norton internet security and microsoft anti spyware program detected it and asked ....

Okay there’s a new virus going around MSN, I thought only my dumb friends were the ones accepting
it, but turns out its across the nation. So I dont know if you've got it and deleted it, or was
smart and didn’t accept it. Well it goes by (as far as I know) three names. There like "Frog
something something blender" "My new photo!" and like "Me and my lesbian friends!". Its a
17kb file, so if some1 in your list tries to send you one the those, DONT ACCEPT! It goes into
your list(takes total control, so you cant do anything) and sends itself to EVERY1 in you....
