Athlon 64 all the way. It's the best one for your money - cheap and fast. I've never seen Intel Xeon used on personal computers though...just on servers. Did you know that trap17 hosting servers use Intel Xeon?

it really depends on for what you are going to use it. For Graphics, Gaming, the Athlon will work better. but if you are not going to use it for that than i guess intel would be good to.

Intel Xeon if a server processor... Very good, but very expensive... Also, someone mentioned it depends for what will the computer be used... If it is a gaming machine (wich I doubt, you said it's for your father), then, AMD is the best choice... However, if graphicaly intense applications will be run (like Photoshop), or perhaps some multimeda programs (Sound Forge, Premiere, etc.), then I recommend going with Intel, perhaps a CPU from the EE series (Extreme Edition)... That's my opinion, you ofcourse know how big your budget is Intel is a bit more expensive, but in my opinion, much better choice than AMD, for serious work...

AMD Athlon FX57 is the best choice for now. Two processor-based system would be even better, but the major problem is related to the price of that product which seem to be not available for every customer. About specifications of that processor, it has full cache of st, 2nd and 3rd level, which lets it run applications faster than any other processors, and if I'm not mistaken the size of cache is 2mb. I've also seen some benchmarks of systems based on that processor, and it was the leader in all gaming benchmarks so fag and almost every multimedia or video encoding-related applications. Also have to admit that FX57 is more of a professional processor, not a typical one for games. Anyways if you are mostly unlimited in your budget - go ahead and try 2 processor system from FX57, and you will get highest performance available on the market so far, and probably avoid frequent upgrades for at least couple of years.

Good Evening!
i think, what ever u say, it will be wrong, cause if u want to play a game, i'll say: take a AMD CPU, if u want to make some office work, i'll say take the intel's CPU.
if u use benchmarks AMD cpu is faster than intel

Also, AMD Athlon 64 bit processors are much better for programming. They are much better with floating point equations than Intel processors.

i would suggest you buy an amd processor if you use your computer for gaming, it will give you beter performance for a lower price. If you run many 'heavy' programs like photoshop you should go with intel. And you better wouldn't buy xeon processor, they are designed for server and they costs way to much for an average home user.

QUOTE(engalex @ Jul 19 2005, 04:53 AM) for normal colling use intel otherwise amd want hight colling system From my personal experiences, Intel processors actually run hotter than AMD processors. I cannot document actual statistics to backup my claims, but so far this is what I have found.

Yes I agree on most replies, it all boils down on what application your computer will be, if that is more on programming, video conversions, etc.. then it would be Intel, you also have the luxury of not having to worry about maintenance such as the thermal conditions. As for AMD it has the best value and performance if you are a gamer, only that you have to really monitor your system more. If you know this then nothing to worry about.

I think that Intel processors are the best way to go. I have a gaming computer and it has an Intel processor and it has worked very well for me. I had a computer with an AMD processor once and I did not like anything about that processor's performance. If you want the best performance that you can possibly get our of your computer by all means go with Intel.

Like what everyone else said, it depends on what you are going to be using this computer for. For more heavy gaming and programming, your best bet would be AMD 64 x2. In my personal opinion, I like amd proccessors the most. I have always gone with them over intel or pentium. They have always worked very well for me and I would never want to switch over to a different proccessor. But it's up to you and how much you can afford. I hope it helps. I'm going to be making myself a computer pretty soon, so this stuff helps me out a lot too xJedix

AMD's Athlon 64 are all better than corresponding pentium 4 processors. I tested tonns of P4 based systems and AMD ones, and the only 1 little advantage that I could notice in P4 was better video encoding time. But overall AMD was better, faster everywhere, even in standard SiSandra tests.

Hard time for Intel to make bussiness decisions (2) QUOTE SAN FRANCISCO (Business 2.0 Magazine) - Much to Wall Street's dismay, Intel is
continuing to invest billions of dollars in Itanium, a chip that most of the industry has written
off. Itanium, Xeon, Woodcrest and Opteron Itanium introduced after ten years in 2001, with no
64-bit software to run and its crappy performance for 32-bit software is already cost a lot to
Intel. AMD took the advantage and with its Opteron chip in 2003 which ran both 32-bit and 64-bit
