Youtube And Google News Blocked In China Amid Tibet

FlameX
QUOTE
Beijing appears to have taken a page out of Myanmar's playbook by blocking some Internet access amid rioting in Tibet that has already seen as many as 80 people killed, according to the Tibetan government in exile.

China blocked access to Google News and YouTube in an apparent attempt to stop the spread of video footage related the rioting going on in several cities in Tibet, including the capital Lhasa. Demonstrations in the city started on March 10, a day commemorating the anniversary of a 1959 uprising against Chinese rule after which the spiritual leader of the country, the Dalai Lama, fled to India.

The Chinese Government blames Dalai Lama for this riot .

China's decision to block access to the sites follows similar government censorship of protests by Myanmar. Last September, Myanmar cut off Internet access entirely to block people from viewing pictures and videos or sending them out of the country. Some analysts at the time said the protests likely spread through the help of the Web, in addition to winning global condemnation of the violent crackdown on protesters there.

Two videos about the situations in Tibet posted on YouTube by the user Amdo2007 both appear to show peaceful demonstrations. The first shows a public gathering, including Tibetan monks in their distinctive saffron robes, while the second video shows what appears to be peaceful marching.

Some videos, including one from Amdo2007, have been "flagged by YouTube's user community" so that users have to verify they are 18 or older by logging in or signing up. The video shows bodies on the streets, protesters throwing rocks at Chinese army vehicles and other images. It may have the most hits, over 80,000 so far, on the subject.

Chinese media and international media have shown footage of buildings burning and crowds damaging store-fronts. Some stations, such as the BBC, picked up photos and other contributions from tourists in Tibet.

Some news channels are also banned to show the videos n snaps of the riots . >

China is not a free country. They even impose restrictions on how many children you can have. They restrict access to thousands of web-sites. It's just like the United States saying that you shouldn't be accessing web-sites that contain terrorist activities. China sees these videos as a threat and has shut them down to preserve the way of life the government has created for its people.

Oh, now I think that's a bit different. China houses a third of the world in a relatively small land-mass. They would be irresponsible NOT to put limits of births. Overpopulation is a problem but that's in a whole different league.

China is generally a terribly-run country and it's a shame they'll soon be the world's greatest superpower. As much as people hate the US, the US is a godsend compared to them. They'll have to sharpen up soon though or the UN will get them.

@guangdian:

What does it say when you try to access sites like YouTube?

Of course they've blocked such inflamatory sites as youtube and foreign news services. Their power stems from control of a populace that doesn't know it has power to change things. Let the common people get the idea that they can choose not to live the way they do, or put up with a government that does what theirs does and nothing could stop them from revolting not even mass murder. And their communist government knows it and it knows that the world will only tolerate a certain level of internal unrest in such a major economic player before they step in, quietly, to resolve the problem.

The governments of today can no longer step in *quietly* to resolve a problem. What you don't know, you're not missing. If you live in tibet or wherever it is that you live and there are restrictions on the way of life, etc. That will be how you were brought up and you won't be missing anything. Some people don't like change very much, but China is in need of it.

I'm not surprised. They are still a communist country...
They're also most likely not gonna do much about the air pollution...some athletes have already pulled out of the Olympics...
