OpenOffice.Org has just released version 2.2 of their free package which includes a document writer, a spreadsheet package, database, presentation software, and more. OpenOffice is an Open Source Project, is free of charge, and includes features which are comparable to / competetive with Microsoft Office 2007. Downloads and more information is available here. Versions are available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Sun/Solaris, etc. The site also incudes 'Legacy' packages which are the recent stable releases and 'Archaic' packages which are capable of running on MS-DOS 3 (I think), so there will definately by a version available for your machine. Documentation also available as PDF's (which OOO is capable of writing). There is a large support group available to assist in solving any problems you might find. This is a recommended security update for those of you who already have OOO installed, and this release is Vista compatible. For those of you using dial-up, this package exceeds 100 Megs with the Java package included, so plan for a long download. or order a CD from HERE.

Thanks for the heads up! Ive got the version thats one before this so ill update fairly soon. I want to recommend this software to anyone who doesnt have MS office, if you already have MS office then this software is still great but its very very similar to MS office so there's not much need t switch in my opinion. But if you were thinking of getting MS office DONT! Get open office instead. Same features, zero cost, fr the download at least! I havent had any issues with it except getting used to where things are! As Said above it is a large download though and i think its increased since when i got it! For that reason anyone should use a download manager just in case your connection dies or you need to pause the download for a little while. Free download manager is a good one, use Google to find it! I dont want to hijack a thread! Seems like a worthwhile update judging by the amount of new features/fixes in this version!

That's great news! Hope there's a portable version of OOO 2.2 coming in the near future (I have the current version as part of my Portable Apps suite). I think it's a great alternative to MS Office...I particularly like the fact that you can export your documents as PDF files.

Cheers jihaslip. I'm useless when it comes to updating software  I just downloaded it and I think the only thing wrong with it is that you should be able to download updates rather than have to download the entire suite again. Anyone using Microsoft Works should get this too - it's 100% better (I'm not just saying that - it really does have loads more features: does Ms Works have presentation and database software? Thanks for posting this! I almost completely use Linux now and really enjoy OpenOffice. Its so much better than Microsoft Office, and cheaper as well.

Thanks for the news, this topic should be on the first information report forum instead of freebies forum because it is news, and good news in fact! By the way, you all can now of updates of open office, it is easy to setup, after you install it, the open office asks you to register the software in order to be noticed of new updates, so if you did not do that, it is time, register your open office copy now! Open Office = Rules! Microsoft Office = Does not rule anymore!

It is a GREAT free version of Microsoft Office. It included changed versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and some others. It also included a calculator. But yes I know you may be wondering! It does open up all microsoft office documents! It is completely cross compatible! If you save something in word it can open in Open Office Word. And Vice versa! It is absolutely a must for people who don\\\'t want to pay for the microsoft version. I see no difference myself and we put it on all computers that we give away to need people. We ghost them with \'em is what I am saying. If you are a college student and don\'t have MS Office I suggest you get this. Because in college you will need some type of word processing application! Did Microsoft change something since the last time I used Open Office (about a year ago)? Because, the last time I checked, trying to open an Open-Office-created word processor document in MS Word did not work. I could open MS-Word-created files in Open Office, though. That was actually a big problem for me. Many of my profs (especially in the English department) want e-mailed files, not hard copies. The university's computers are loaded with the Office suite, which basically made Open Office useless to me.

Merged two topics to form just one about the software in question. First of all, this is NOT a Microsoft Product. It is an Open Source Project sponsored in large part by Sun Microsystems and the OpenOffice.Org group. Secondly, yes, OpenOffice.Org software will read Microsoft Word documents, but knowing Microsoft, their Word package will not open the OpenOffice.Org documents. OpenOffice.Org is a Freeware, Open Source Project and is competitive with the MS Office packages. Both have Document software, Presentation software, Spreadsheets, etcetera. The largest difference is that OOO uses an Open Document Standard which has been adopted by many Organisations, whereas the proprietary MicroSoft Office format is unique to Microsoft and requires you to have their Microsoft software to work with the documents.

i like it too, but another problem is that when you send documents with Open office format, most people can't open it...because most of them are using microsoft office...

I don't like OpenOffice...I prefer Office, it works better for me and it has a much better user interface. I tried OpenOffice and it's not bad but it can be better. PEACE!

O yes and this is one more thing why open office got sued because the guys reverse engineered the word format or .doc so that they could also save their files in the word format however on the other hand microsoft got sued for exploiting monopoly over the market of word processors with this however microsoft is now trying to go with other idea to open their standard however to make it standard in the industry and many people are against it however there are those who are pro and on the other hand theer e is also microsofts loby which my speed up and engage the process of the all things. I personally would like to see microsofts format becoming standard and I think it should be stnaandard of industry but one way orthe other we will see wheteher of not this will happen.

I personally love OpenOffice. I've used it for years and have never had any real problems with it. I didn't find it any noticeably worse than Works, and while Office might have some added functionality, it's hard to beat the cost. My only problem with it is the lack of usage it gets. By that I mean, most people use Office or Works, so I have to save OpenOffice documents as Word documents which can remove formatting, and that can be slightly annoying. There have also been minor annoyance factors with various features, such as with OpenOffice's spreadsheet program when I had trouble removing zeros from in front of decimal places for formula results. Again though, I think OpenOffice is well worth it. It's an excellent suite and you can't beat the price. It even comes (or used to, anyway, there was controversy about whether to remove it in newer additions) with 'Easter Eggs', meaning hidden fun programs, one of which is a recreation game of Space Invaders. I'd say if you have Works or Office they'll come in handy in the business world, but OpenOffice is starting to get used more heavily by companies now, and is hardly a poor substitute for someone who's interested in price efficiency.

I just downloaded this when I tried it out on my Ubuntu Live CD. It is a great alternative to MS Office and I recommend switching. It is more powerful than MS Office in the way that it can export as PDF and save as .doc, .html, and .odt which is the OpenOffice format. The program also has a fairly similar GUI to MS Office and of course it is free. I enjoy it very much.
