| | QUOTE A reader writes:"A french appeal court ruled yesterday in favour of somebody who downloaded about 500 movies, on the ground that those were private copies, and that he didn't redistributed them, and that a tax was payed on blank media. This sets the huge precedent that P2P is legal over there. For the details, apparently no distinction was made on the method used to download the movies (upload issues) and the famous EUCD directive was even used by the defending lawyer."
that is crazy

When I down...erm...rip legal movies...from a friend, the output is usually 700 MB which ends up on a CD. This is a reason why I'm considering moving to other countries because organizations like the Motion Pictures Association of America come after you...or at least I don't think they can.

u think that's crazy? The Canadian Music Industry lost to the government in a court appeal to ban downloads on the Internet. Therefore, Canadians can download music without restrictions. xboxrulz

That's it, I'm officially moving to Canada according to what xboxrulz just said. Besides unrestricted downloading, Canada has more snow, and my uncle lives there.

In the Netherlands you can make one copy of movies and music for personal use. But that's it. This means that things like downloading a movie from BitTorrent isn't legal since you are uploading content as well, and that's illegal. I'm guessing uploading while downloading (when using P2P apps) will be dealt with in France sometime soon.

wow! the court has spoken! and they said those downloads are legal. i don't know if i should happy about that or not. I ahve downloaded some songs but not movies. and those are 500 movies! personal i don't like the verdict, they should have convicted the guy. but reasoning out that because he bought the blank Cds which made him pay taxes is a little funny. hehehe

That is not right! I hate illegal pirating. Some things are ok, like I don't really think software should be made paid except for certain ones that a lot of time has been put into, but theres a lot of them now you have to pay $100+ for simple upgrades, which is just bullcrap. THe one thing I do not support though is illegally downloading of movies, and especially music. Music is my life, and if people keep downloading illegally, less and less songs are going to be coming out (we can already see this now). This is also partly why rap has turned so bad. They stopped caring about good quality songs if it might not even get much money for it, whereas they will get more money if they put together more, horrible songs. Ones that all say the same thing, but they found they will make more money that way, and that is all our fault. People who download music illegally, that is why we have so many problems here with the music crisis.

Tonic, there's nothing about a new law. The only thing is that the government is just revising the copyright law. Please read the following sentence: "courts and Copyright Boards support the proposition that downloading and uploading of music is legal" xboxrulz

Riots In France

because the youth are being corrupted by people who want nothing but destruction and instill fear

France Regects Eu Constitution
Could set Europe back by years (4) I can't believe it..... A European council spent 2 1/2 years developing a constitution that
would unite Europe and give it more political clout in the global arena. It would replace the
current 6-month rotating EU presidency with a permanent one, appoint a foreign minister, make taxes
more uniform accross country borders, and allow Europe to speak with one voice on important issues.
Rather than tiny, independent parts, it would have found strength in coming together as a unified
whole. But, of course, a slight majority of French voters (54%, to be exact.) said "Non!"....
