I wouldn't imagine it is. 1) totally kill your electric bill if you use a lot of programs 2) up the risk of worms or other types of virus' to get on it 3) rebooting helps and allows programs you installed to start and sometimes act faster.

I personally always leave my computer on 24/7 and I have a good job *cough* so I dont worry about electric. ( I have no TV BTW im an out door person ) I know it kills electric bills and that it heats up the computer alot. So, if you are willing to do it, before you sleep reset pc and when you wake up, turn it off for 20 min while showering to give your pc a rest. ( leave window open, or a fan on near the CPU ) You can reduce the risk of worms and viruses by leaving on anti spyware, firewall and a virus scanner and let the programs do a scan between 2am and 4am while you are asleep.. well, depends on WHEN you sleep, lol!

lol very true man. I don't really think the $$$ is an issue but over all it is like.. turn it off sometimes. Any machinery will last longer the less the usage when it doesn't need to be on.

My friend's PC blew up, because of lack of circulation, the computer room door was kept shut all day and he left it on for 5 days straight without giving it a rest. It started a fire, burnt down most of his house, I'm just glad he's safe now.

I have left my computer on for 24/7 for YEARS now. I turn it off once in awhile for things such as vacations, etc., but that is very rare. And I have NEVER had any problems with leaving it on. Just make sure that you don't do something stupid like leave the door of the room shut or break the fans  . One thing that is bad about it is the energy bills. Computers take quite a bit of power to operate, so it costs quite a bit to run it, but I don't have to pay for it so I don't care . Another thing that could cause problems is that leaving it on reduces the fan life. Fans do have a limited time span for ~50,000 hours (http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/volcano/rs/a1725.htm). This is a lot of hours, but I guess it could cause some problems down the road.

Actually, starting up and shutting down your system a lot is much the same as starting and stopping your car engine a lot... the starter burns out faster. Once warmed up, it's better for the electronics to stay that way. Anyway, your computer won't die if you leave it on all the time. And if you're worried about it starting fires, you'll find that most systems have a bios setting that allows you to have it shut down if it hits a certain temperature in the case/processor. Worried about power? Use the power settings. Set it so the moniter turns itself off after half an hour, and the sleep function can put your PC into a low power mode without having the machine shut down.

I'm normally turning it off for the night... The slogan of my computer was "Hear the silence", and the computer should be very silent... But... The noise is like a noisy CD-rom... So I turn it off for the night, else I can't sleep

I could imagine it's bad for your computer. But im to lazy to restart the computer and wait for everything to load and I don't pay the bill so I could care less about that. But its running non stop without a break so imagine it's bad for it. It would never get a break.

Whether or not it's good to leave your PC on has changed.. I read a lot of articles before that explain how the wear and tear on the HDD used to be bad, and now it is minimised. According to more recent studies if you are gone for 30 or more minutes it is much more efficient to turn off your PC. The only exception to the rule is server hardware, but it is better suited for an "always-on" environment.

I haven't turn off my computer for 1 and a half years now. I only restart it and turn it off if i move it or change some part. The computer is perfectly working an non hardware part have been damaged. So i say better to leave it on. Oh, i only turn off the monitor when i'm away from my computer

I leave my computer on 24/7 because I'm always downloading large files and even when I'm not, I don't want to wait for it to start up each morning. I don't think it causes an increase in electrical bills that I can't handle (I reckon it'll take quite a few computers on all the time to do that) and I don't think it causes extra harm to the computer. Sure, the fans and stuff may not last as long but when stuff stops working we just get a new one.

In fact, turning your computer on and off ever 30 minutes or even every 2 hours is bad for your computer, it's much better to lets say turn it on and leave it on if you're going just somewhere and will be back soon, after some hours.. same with restarting, restarting your computer is also affecting your hardware, do it lots of times and it will brake.. Hard disks has some kind of limit, it can turn off and on, same for the motherboard, as I read it's much healthier for your PC to always be on if the temperatures on it is quite cool, I mean don't leave a computer in a middle of a game which needs lots of resources always.. Same with electric simple lamp, it has a limit how much times it can be turned on and off and a limit for how long it will give light.. same with computers, even though that limit is very huge for most modern computers if you take good care of them, it's not like after 200 restarts you'll have problems.. I personally try to turn off my computer only when I go sleeping or away for some days, when I know I'll be away for more than 8 hours.. Of course turning off your computer saves some energy and you'll need to pay less, so it also depends on how much money you posses, even though having a laptop consumes/safes energy, I guess same with LCD monitors, because CRT or Plasma needs more energy to work.

No problem at all if it“s cool and clean (no dust around) and has nice memory management. the first computers weren“t allowed to shutdown because they had to work too much! cellphones are computers too and i hardly turn mine off.

Decent Computer
for £250 (7) Hi, it's my birthday at the beginning of May (8th), and I expect to get roughly £250 or $500. I

Windows Explorer Crashes Consistantly [resolved]
closes itself down after leaving on for a few minutes (9) This is a constant problem whenever I try sorting my files, suddenly Windows Explorer shuts itself
down by calling in Dr. Watson. Then restarts and repeats again after awhile. It doesn't happen
all the time, but the crash problem comes frequently and I have no idea how to diagnose the problem.

Widescreen Computer Display
Is it better? (9) What do you think of the widescreen display laptops are beginning to adopt nowadays? Is that the
right way to go? Or should we stick to our original display (800 * 600, 1024 * 768 ... etc) instead
of (1280 * 800). For me I think these widescreen display should be the way to go, it allows you

PC Randomly Crashes And Hangs, Ideas? (17) I recently got a new computer, a NEC i-Select D5410. A few days ago it started to randomly crash,

Computer Freezes Running Full Screen Game
Display and sound freeze and skip (8) I'm using a Compaq Presario 2100 (Compaq is worst computer ever made, in my opinion). When I
run a game - full screen 640x480 - sometimes it will freeze my computer. When this happens, the
