One of the best place to begin with is Google search itself. If they search with the right keyword they will always end up in the desired websites where they will get exactly what they are looking for. So, firstly you may tell your forum users to search Google with proper keywords. And in Google search it is important to put with inverted commas. For example if you want to search free forum softwares should be search as "free forum softwares".

Secondly, www dot hotscripts dot com is one of the best place where every softwares from forum, cms websites, scripts, guestbooks, and other scripts written in all languages are listed in categories. It is very easy to find.

If your looking to create a free software forum you could just look at www.download.com (C|net's download site) and look at all the software you want. Its a very catagorized site.
And if your looking for scripts php and alot of other webmaster resorces look at www.thefreecountry.com.

Hey! This is exactly why I created my site http://betterwindowssoftware.com; I am never happy with search results that contain mixed freeware/shareware/adware/commercial titles. To deal with this on my software site, I have written some code to allow for this advanced search filtering on my site. There are over 21,360 software titles listed on my database, so it helps to have some filtering.

Category Listings
Software is classified on my site by category. On the home page, I display exactly how many titles are in each major category (I specify that there are 1358 Graphics Apps, but I don't calculate each of the minor categories' counts).

From any product detail page, you can click on the program's category link to view other titles in that category.


Filtered Searching
If you perform a search for "iPod", you'll get 148 "iPod" results. If you click the "Freeware" filter, you have only 8 "Freeware / iPod" results. If you then click the "Shareware" filter, you'd see 136 "Shareware / iPod" results, etc.

The filter can be specified during the search, or it can be used after the search gives you too many results.

I sometimes like looking in the "Adware" type. These programs are also free, but sometimes tend to be better written than their freeware counterparts.


I am planning on incorporating many more powerful searching features. If you have ideas, let me know - I am an extremely adept programmer and could incorporate just about any good idea - especially if it helps the users on the site.
