"suck" is such a harsh word.
I do like the 'depth' of both of them, but they need to be blended a little better. There is some potential in them. Keep working and read up on the graphics Tutorials.

well lets start with the tech borders

-Your tech border need to be in front of everything and not in the background so someone could see it
-since it is in the background it doesn't show much tech border detail.

Everyone has problem with text just read up on tutorials how to use text effectively

Background
-lack of depth (flat)
-lack lighting
-lack smoothness

Colors do not work with the backgrounds you got

Path to follow In this order

-Brushing
-backgrounds
-color
-render blending
-text
-filters
-border

you can do them in any order you like however if you want to use filters effectively you need to master everything else.

My thoughts exactly.

Personally, I'm not a fan of tech borders at all, but if you really want to do them, Saint Mike is the person to ask...he's more into them. <3
