I came across this website through did and I know from various topics and posts about text editors for coders, programmers and those to write quick notes. These editors might be for you and for some you will be able to recognize the popular ones such as Notepad++ or cam across one and tried it out and on top of that each of these text editors work for various operating systems and so if your looking for a Mac or Linux replacement then check this article out. So check out the article in the below source link and if you want a quick link I have listed them below. Source http://sixrevisions.com/tools/12-excellent...ors-for-coders/Text Editors QUOTE NOTEPAD++ (Windows) Bluefish Editor (Mac + Linux) TextWrangler (Mac) Smultron (Mac) Caditor (Windows) gedit (Linux) GNU Emacs (Windows, Mac, Linux) Crimson Editor (Windows) ConTEXT (Windows) SciTE (Windows, Linux) Komodo Edit (Windows, Mac, Linux) jEdit (Windows, Mac, Linux)

I have used some of those, but when i write code, i generally use notepad, because I have no use for the extra features, and all of the extra features often end up distracting me from what im writing. The one thing that is useful about these kinds of editing, is the debugging options, as it is much quicker to use one of these, tan to count up all of the "{"s and "}"s

Add to the list of Free Text Editors for Linux Quanta - look into the packages for your Distro. Runs great under Ubuntu 8.04. Colour coded text, project filing system, lots of excellent features.

Hmmm....I don't know most of them. Thanks for the list SM. I know only Notepad++ and Komodo Edit in the list. Komodo Edit is really nice for PHP. I recommend it as PHP editor for all newbies of PHP.... It would be nice if someone compare the features of all these editors(regardless of platform).

I have been using them for the past 2 years and have recommended to many of my friends... Infact increased the user base to some extend. They are awesome and has syntax highlighting for many languages and light weight. They are simply superb. My votes are for Scite and Notepad++.

Notepad++ is really good, but a better and simpler replacement in my opinion for windows notepad is notepad2, because it is much lighter to read simple text files or edit them or do what it offers, you can get notepad2 from here: http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html

Why have you forgotten Vim? Shame on you brother! Back on topic, I mostly use Komodo IDE as it's good for Python and PHP (as xpress said) and I tried the IDE but because it's commercial and quite expensive I erased it after the trial finished, it was quite good too! Also I forgot, gedit is quite nice too.

Thanks for the List SM. It may not fit the topic but i have found one IDE that can be useful for multiple programming languages, maybe this can help coders as well. Try SkyIDE.

As well as gedit, which is on your list, there's also nedit, which while it looks a lot more "technical" and, at least in my opinion, "old school", it's pretty user friendly and is able to be run on a whole bunch of OSs. That said, if I had a choice I'd use gedit over nedit, but if you wanted an editor that you could get used to over multiple OSs and not have to keep remembering the changes between, say, Notepad++ and gedit, nedit's certainly worth a look at.

The only negative i found is that it does not offer help such as a fully fledged dreamweaver can offer. oh and another disadvantage is that when searching for a particluar string of text in a folder..it can crush and you have to do it all over again! I therefore switched to dreamweaver which is what im using now but notepad is cool.

I've tried out SCiTE and jEdit, but NOtepad++ is definitely the best I've ever used My development environment is usually just the command line, Notepad++, windows explorer, and Firefox open to API docs

I haven't heard of most of those before. Notepad ++ is definitely a good one. I use that for most of my coding. I might try out some of the other recommendations though. I'm finding Notepad ++ lacks a few features I would like. Thanks!
