well the sites which say sub-domain for you means that you can have subdomain of you domian...like Tyssen explained.
you are correct that you will have to use folders and those folders will have their INDEX file as well and then you can make them as your subdomain. for e.g. if you having a domain like http://yourdomain.yourhost.com then your subdomain will be somthing like http://subdomain.yourdomain.yourhost.com or it can be somthing like http://yourdomain.yourhost.com/subdomain i hope this answers your question. |

Good question. For the question and due to responses I dug deeper to find out the following (which I never would have taken a second glance if it wasn't for this topic):
URL is separated and categorized as {protocol} :// {place type} {separator} {server address} Protocol: can be HTTP, FTP, FILE and more. It is the first instruction for your browser HOW to search for your entered address. Place type: always expressed as WWW which is usually omitted these days thanks to the wildcard Separator: dot Server address: COM, GOV, NET, ORG are few examples. So we get, http://www.trap17.com or http://trap17.com This is also known as the TOP DOMAIN NAME. When you see SLASH after the server address, it means to look for it in the server address' folder. [/tab]http://www.trap17.com/banners - folder named "banners" in trap17's address Subdomain is an actual physical address that WWW can locate. It can be expressed as {server name} {separator} {top domain name} [tab]forum.trap17.com If a location of a house represents the top domain name, subdomain can be viewed as each floor of that house. And within each floor you have X number of rooms or FOLDERS to store your belongings. At this point of WWW stage, it does not matter if you have subdomain or top domain with folders. But when you set up a subdomain it is easier to manage without disturbing other files. This is how TRAP17 or other subdomain lenders work. TRAP17 could have (but never will) given out www.trap17.com/yourCpanel as your subdomain address. But then everyone would have an access to the main folder where others could view/edit/delete your file. To divide and separate (mainly for security reason) everyone's files, subdomain is the best way. By doing so, you can access TRAP17's main server but view/edit/delete only your portion in the collective. What this is saying, you can setup subdomain of your own WITHIN your subdomain hosted by TRAP17, and you can use it for other programs, developments or hosting for others. TRAP17 provides every hosting member with a free SUBDOMAIN name, i.e. yourDesiredName.trap17.com |

Thank you mayank. I hope my post was straight to the point. I have tendency to digress.
Getting back to the topic, sader, I forgot to mention that the unlimited subdomain is incorrect. You can only have total of 99 subdomains. This means that your subdomain address would be something like www.subdomain.yourCurrentName.trap17.com or subdomain.sader.trap17.com |

Hey, I have a couple of questions about subdomains too.
Does it cost credits to add a subdomain to my trap17 hosting? And can each subdomain have its own phpmyadmin. Example: I want to add a subdomain to make a web page for my band. I would like it to have dynamic content like news and all the text that my bandmates can update, but I dont want them entering to my cpanel. Is it possible to do this? Thanx. |

No it does not cost you anything to set up your own subdomain under your subdomain with TRAP17.
And as far as I know, you can have multiple forums but it needs to be set up in your root directory. So, set up the forum/news and give an access to that forum/news only. That is possible. I have been experimenting with CuteNews and it seems to be the best choice for just updating information. CuteNews does not require any SQL database so it will not take so much out of your hosting space. And adding information is as easy as posting (does not require FTP or cPanel access). CuteNews is also a part of pre-installed scripts, courtesy of TRAP17. Ain't it cool? |

You can add any number of subdomains to your site as long as it dont exceed the limit, which is usually 99 if I've not been mistaken, or you can just park another domain at trap17 and then use the domain...
