PC or mac? I use PsyncX for my mac, (mainly because i don't have leopard... with time machine)
I used a trial version of an NTI backup program, and it worked well... ALAS it was not free and only gave me limited backups... Which was fine since I used it when I was backing up my data to do a fresh install of windows on my windows machine. |

R-Studio (Link) is one of the best tools around to recover deleted/lost data. I have used it before to recover some of my school work - my final art exams were taking place and my Photoshop files just disappeared on my USB memory stick and in only 5 minutes I managed get the file back for submission!
Secondly, I highly recommend that you use Acronis for backups since I have used it for about 5 years and it just keeps getting better. |

Acronis is very good, but don't forget it's for backups, and can't recover lost files if you haven't made backups of them first!
The good thing about acronis is that not only it backs up files or folders, but it backs up whole Hard Drives. Rejoice! |
