Hello people I know I aint posted in the forum for ages but having college and all it makes it kinda hard to keep up. Well I checked in only to find the dns servers have changed lol and im still having problems with that sad.gif , well anyway since I have been away from this community for ages I jus thot I should write an article on what’s been keeping me busy all this time. Well to be hosnest its simeple whats kept me busy all this time and that is Apache Apache and even more Apache. Well we all want free hosting and all, and considering you are a trap 17 member Im sure as hell you would testify that it don’t get better than this. Well so you’ve got ya free hosting or its still pending approval lol. So I was wondering have you ever actually thought about starting your own web server from your own computer from home which you have totally full control of. Well maybe some of you have or maybe some of you think that’s a wicked idea but don worry im here to tell you just how fast easy and efficient it could be just starting you web server and getting it running in just a few seconds. And you know what the best part about all this is , well I’ll tell you, all the software im going to mention below are just upsolutely free , you wont spend a dime upsolutely free software.
To give you a rough overview of what im talking about I’ll try and give you the specifications that im running on my own webserver.
--webserver core components:
1. Apache/SSL 2.0.50
2. PHP 5.0.0/ PECL 5.0/ PEAR
3. PERL 5.8.3-809/ mod_perl 1.99_13 (opt. ASP)
4. PYTHON 2.3.4/ mod_python 3.1.3
5. TSW SCTL (requires JRE!)
--webserver add components (modules):
1. mod_gzip 2.0.26a
2. mod_security 1.8.3
3. Spyce 1.3.12
4. ZendOptimizer 2.5.3
--database components:
1. MySQL 4.0.20d server and clients
2. phpMyAdmin 2.6.0-beta 2
--add components:
1. FTP: Cerrubus Ftp server 0.92
2. SMTP/POP3/IMAP/: HMailSErver 2.0.5.5
3. Iloha mail 0.82
4. OpenSSL 0.97d
5. AWStats 6.1
6. Webalizer 2.01-10
7. phpConf 1.00
8. SimpleCA 1.0
9. some more addons
10. TSW_Component_Docs v3.3.2
Plugin with the latest documentations of the distributed components
11. TSW_Tomcat v5.0.25
OpenSource JSP/Servlet Container 2.4 (reference implementation)
12. TSW_Wordpress v1.2
And i forgot to mention that the server also runs two webmail programmes iloha mail and squirrel mail and it also includes an intergrated control panel to control all the available modules.

WeBlog system (based on PHP/MySQL
Quite impressive ha , lol I know and im gonna let you know how you could have yours too in the second bit of this article which I will be writing tomorrow but first ill let you know what you need to get your own webserver.
• A web server or a web server package
• Some addons like php mysql perl and others
• And most importantly if you want people to get access to your site you are going to need dynamic dns and im gonnt tell you how to get all this in the second bit of this article.

In the meantime feel free to pm me or mail me if you need this info any quicker lol. Well c ya tomorrow in the second bit of this article.

And by the way you could see the perfomance of my server at http://www.matty.homelinux.com
there i have only got an invison power board so if you want to see the finer details and test some scripts there you could try going here.http://matty.homelinux.com/testscripts/

Even Being the Administrator of this Site! I recommend people to start your own web-server. It is cheap and you are satisfied! The only downside is, you got to keep your pc on forever and any power-failure can screw up the things...
However, If you require to host MP3 files, Downloads, ZIP files etc.. Homeserver is the best option!

If I the day comes when I have to run my own webserver at home, I'd probably have to give up with the web altogether unsure.gif I mean, just looking at that list above already gave me a light headache laugh.gif

"Competitionship" isn't even a word. Anyways, I don't have the hardware sepcs to run a serious servers. I do have a 5MBit line, apperantly 2.5 times faster than T1, so I have that. Seriosuly though, If I get a good deal on a good mobo/dual-xeons/good RAM, good specs over all. Then yeah, I wouldn't mind starting my own hosting company.

On my Windows box, I run Apache 1.3, Perl 5, and PHP 4.3.6. I have a Linux server set up with Apache 2, but I hardly ever use it anymore.

I only use my server for testing scripts and sites locally before uploading them. All remote access is blocked.

I'm assuming you mean illegal MP3's. Just because they're on your own computer, doesn't mean you can't get into trouble for them. To my knowledge, ISP's are obligated to report the transferring of illegal media to the appropriate authorities. Hosting such content on your home computer would most likely increase the chances of you getting into trouble.

BUT because we're all law-obiding citizens (except Lurk tongue.gif), we aren't into sharing illegal MP3's anyway... right? RIGHT?

Well, You don't need a very fast computer for running your own homeserver as your going to host your own site on it... unless you are going to host other sites too.. But the thing is about UPTIME. I never shutdown my computer myself.. Infact, I had setup my online server on my WINDOWS machine. I linked my IP with noip.com and got a nice dedicated Ip address. everything was going fine, exept at times when I screwed up someting and I had to restart my computer. Result : site was down.. But it did not matter much as I was hostng my own site. also, your ISP connection is another problem. If they undergo backup operation, your site again goes down..
So even if you can get a nice CELERON Comp with atleast 512 Mb Ram and Back it up with a GENERATor ( a cheap one will do ) and Have atleast 2 internet connections in hand (incase one goes down ) then You have your self your homemade DEDICATED server...

As for as storing mp3 files and stuff, I think one can always change their extention and pass it on as a text file.. Well, you should find other nice ways to let the other guy know that it is actually an MP3 file. However, even if a average person has brains and opens up a 3 mb file to find curruped data, he should try renaming it..But that's altogether a diffrent story..

Yea, one of my friends has a couple of rackmounts. I personally don't see any use at the moment. They are now making routers that allow you to use 2 isps and have double the bandwidth (in pcmag).

and i was just wondering, how much hd space does trap17 have?
