I want to start to a site where users can upload any file for all users.Is there any legal issues involved

Be prepared to have a lot of bandwith backing you up. As for legal issues, I have no clue

Yeah if it gets popular you will start needing your own serving and paying 100 dollars a month

Well as the others stated, you should be most concerned about bandwith and what people are exactly backing up and storing on this "site". Make note of the following:

• No Illegal Content
• No Pornography/Excplecet pictures (unless you will allow it...)
• Warez, Cracks, Hack, Illegal movies and music
• Make a full scale legal notice and privacy policey
• Make a set amount of space and bandwith members have
• Set some rules and a process to avoid spamming and mulitiple accounts
• Make the user have a VALID e-mail adress, and make them confirm that!
• Signup sheet is good bonus, to make it easy
• Get a good host, or host your self (ie: ComputingHosting)

Why do you want to make this kind of service anyways? It sounds okay, but e prepared for A LOT OF TRAFFIC!

If you intent to host this service on your trap17 free web hosting account, be sure that the uploaded contents from your visitors does not violate any of the terms and conditions set by Trap17. MaineFishing45 had posted some of its points. Not following the rules will result in termination of hosting service and banned membership.

I'll advice you to provide this service to trusted people only, like your family members or your friends. They will most probably not use alot of bandwidth and space on your hosting account. Also, you can be better assured that they will not violate the terms and conditions. I'd suggest you to provide password protected uploading accounts to enhance security.

Thx all of u for replying.No Inspiron,I am not starting it here .what i am planning is a space for uploading content related to my place ie kerala(a south indian state)film music,documents etc .what if the content is copyrighted ,what are the consequences?.actually there are so many websites offering indian mp3s for download

also put ads on your site and if they want to get rid of the ads they have to set up an account and pay you. Good way of getting some money from it :-) Aslo let us know when you have set it up

MaineFishing45 has a good answer, so i only want to had a few points:


- Create a script or buy one to able visitors to sign in and
have their own account (like filefront.com or rapidshare.de)

- Put a limit of uploads for all members

- Put a limit of downloads per day for all members

- If you know how, create your own servers (if you want help just send me a private message), or do like
rapidshare.de does, they have 2 high speed servers for files bigger then 50 MB or something like that,
and i normal server for small files, so like this you will have dedicated servers for big files and for small
files.

- Give a chance for users to register, but at the same time, ask them if they want to buy a premium
account, and here you have to know the prices of the competition (visit the below list of the best free
uploads/download services), so you can have a chance to win some clients, and perhaps to make some
money, but i tell you now that rapidshare.de, filefront.com, megaupload.com, sendspace.com and
pando.com (it's a program, it's the best idea so far, and it supports a great speed, i've test it) are the best
ones, so you should consider visit those websites above and see, studie, analize how they work before
you do anything else.

- Create a script or buy one that able visitors to win or earn money from the number of uploads and
downloads of their files, like it is done in megaupload.com, or think of something else if you want to be
original, but you don't really need to, just be wise and smart, think of everything to attract visitors.

- One again, think of everything to attract new visitors, and then techniques to make them register in your
free and pay service.

- Build a great website, with some flash, good programming, good scripts, good looking graphics, but yet, it
also got to be very simple to navigate, you don't want people to wait for a graphic or animation to get
loaded, if you know how to do this, good, if not, do something simple like the rapidshare.de website, or
even simplier like sendspace.com wich is a lot more attractive in my opinion.

- Now, you also have to promote your service (free or pay or both), you need to submit your website adress to the major search engines wich are:

- http://msn.com
- http://askjeeves.com

If that is too work for yourself, get a seo (search engine optimizer), or you just could promote/submit your website only to the google search engine, in my opinion, that's what matters, just for you to know, yahoo.com search results are powered by google, and another thing, google has more then 75% of all the searchs in the internet, it is now close to have the monopoly.
