I was emailed this link from a friend of mine. I am not quite sure what to make of it. It seems possible, but not probable. They are making it seem easier than it will really be. CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), has apparently discovered a way to make the internet ten thousand times faster than typical broadband is today. Apparently the project started when CERN needed a way of accessing gigantic amounts of data from their Particle Accelerator in remote locations. With a grid of servers around the world and fiber optics interconnecting them all, one could download a high definition feature film in seconds. If this project is a success, gone are the days of waiting for something to download.

Actually, connecting cables have been made that can push fiber optic data down a microtube at 10 terabits per second already. (Yes, already. It's not just a concept. That's 10,995,116,277,760 bits, or 1,374,389,534,720 bytes; pretty much enough to transfer all that data you were talking about in less than 0.01 seconds, not just two.) Now the bottlenecks are the receiving and sending ends of the systems; the ends of the cables are the real problem now. The ends of the cables can only transmit so quickly (maybe 100 Mbps is the limit now? Possibly 8 to 9 Gbps.) So to actually make full use of the wire, you would have to connect about 100 to 200 plugs inside the computer, which is very hard to maintain.

If there is fast internet, we will need a faster hard drive because it depends on the speed of a harddrive to see how fast it can write files on it.

All I'm worried about is whether or not php, html, etc. will still be used... if not.... I'll be super angry... sad.gif If anyone knows whether or not that would be or is the case... then tell me please....

well the web standards html/css sure aren't going to change. That is on the client side... parsed in the browser. There would be no need for that to change. And unless these new servers have some odd compatibility issue that I am not aware about I'm pretty sure server owners can and will put php on their new servers.

I think you should first think of your ethernet card smile.gif , It will take at least 7-8 years to change all the infrastructure that has been laid down for the internet, all the current eqipment will have to go, new routing algorithms will have to be designed, by then you will have super fast SSDs.

That's pretty true and to how long it would take to change the infrastuture almost in every region, we'll have to find out.

That is amazing. I can't wait for the internet to be that fast...I can only wonder what it'd be like to torrent data? I mean an entire discography, depending on seeds, takes between 10 hours to a day...maybe even 2 days...so with this speed we're talkin a few seconds at most?

Also, the line "social networking could become the main way we communicate." really scares me. As excited as I am about this, it also means more antisocialism among teens and possibly even adults. I mean, at some point you have to go outside and experience the world, rather than sit around on your comp with your "high speed" internet and look at pron or talk with people you can't even see....and havin said that, I should take my own advice. tongue.gif

Back on topic though, this is a huge break through, and I think all those computer companies need to do some developing for this grid so that engineers can push to have the grid put in place through out the whole world.

just hope it is compatible with our computers and the inventor/maker/provider doesn't monopolize it to make the price much higher
