The default speed of the Start Menu is pretty slow, but you can fix that by editing a Registry Key. Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up. If this doesn't work for some reason, then you might try the following: Navigate to Display Properties then Appearance then Effects and turn off the option titled Show menu shadow. You will get much better overall performance. |

Already knew about this.
Everybody, be aware. If you do this wrong, then it could completely *BLEEP* up your computer. I'd recommend not changing anything in the Registry editor. |

Well, I think most of the people here are pretty good with computers...
Not like the noobs on CF. Also, it is like this for a reason. It actually has a delay for the computer to check if there are any problems it needs to rectify before shutting down. I wouldn't recommend changing this by much. This post has been edited by teknoTom: Nov 3 2007, 10:03 PM |

You never know. Just letting people know in case.
Better be safe than sorry, and all that jazz. |

Why would they put a delay on the Start Menu to begin with? It would seem as though you would want it to pop up as soon as possible.
Yet another dumb move on Microsoft's part in my opinion. i agree with what Liam_CF said, I have messed up a computer pretty bad while changing registry edits. |

IMO, the best method of really speeding up your start menu is to clean it out, sort/organize the rest, and reducing the number of items shown on the main start menu.
