I realize there is another topic in this section about the recycle bin, but it doesn't mention how to rename the recycle bin.
Like most other tasks of this nature, accomplishing this will require modifying the windows registry.

First, open the registry editing tool "regedit" by clicking on Start, Run then typing in "regedit" before pressing OK.

In the regedit program you will see a simple looking program with a tree structure control in the left side (displays the setting categories) and a panel at the right side which is for displaying/editing the values.

From here click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER in the panel on the left.

from there.. click on:

QUOTE
  • Software
  • Microsoft
  • Windows
  • ShellNoRoam
  • MUICache

Once here you should see the panel at the right side fill up with data.

Use the scrollbar in the right panel and scroll down until you see "Recycle Bin" under the column labelled "Data" (column furthest to the right).
Once you find recycle bin in the list, select the value in the same row but at the furthest left (under the "Name" field).

Once selected, right click and on the right click menu click on "Modify".

A small dialog window should appear with the text "Recycle Bin" selected, simply delete this (or type) then enter your custom recycle bin name.

After you've input your custom name, press "OK" to apply the modification.

After, go to your desktop and refresh (Shortcut: F5) and the recycle bin should have a new name.

EOF.

For those who use Windows Vista, here is another way.
1. Right Click on Recycle Bin
2. Click Rename http://stexel.net/Step1.jpg (Screenshot)
3. Type in what you'd like to name it and you're done. http://stexel.net/Done.jpg (Screenshot)

lol That's the easy way now. I don't see why it is necessary to rename it anyway but I guess it is up to you.

Yes, I do have to wonder why you would need to change the name of your recycle bin. It's too perfect of a name for what it does anyway.

Well, it would be fun to make an original name - you can make it a long title or just change a letter or two. That's what I did for the IE icon - I changed one letter in the word "explorer" so that it read "Internet Exploder".

Ya I guess if you want to change the names for a theme like Harry Potter you could to make it go along with the theme. Calling Internet Explorer "The Flying Car" instead I guess would be nice. Also if you want to be plain old different and change things up some I guess you could do that too. I think I'll stick with the original names though instead, that way instead of trying to keep track of what I changed the names to.

Very nice tutorial!

It is well explained and the images are helpful for those who might be new to editing the registry.

PS - best custom Recycle Bin name: "Poop Chute"
