anwiii, i did not created a top 3 nor top 5 and for that i am sorry, i will now, but i do not think you are beeing fair in your comments, at least from my experience, NVU is free and a good web site editor (html and other web language editor) but, it is not, by far, the best free website builder/html leditor, and i am sure of it because i have a quite big experience using html editors and website builders, beleave it!

If you want to verify my knowledge in website builders and free/pay html editors, be my guest, i know a lot, specially because i have installed and tested dozens of programs like that, so i know what i am talking about.

i don't need to verify your knowledge nor am i questioning it. all i questioned was why nvu wasn't on the list. it is far better than most on the list if you were to do a poll, i am sure it would rank very high for those who have used it.

on the other hand, i do disagree with your nvu comment. that's fine. i personally strictly use nvu and dream weaver. they both do pretty much the same crap...but for quick simple web pages, i use nvu. i'm not a professional website builder by any means, but i know html and i'v created more than a few web pages in my time.

now i only said that because i have found nvu to have all the features anyone would ever need in a free program(tell me i'm wrong and i will debate that tooth and nail) also, it it has a wysiwyg layout aside from the html editor. those and other features make it GREAT for the newbie....and even for the experienced like me. it's VERY easy to use and again, i recomend it HIGHLY.

so when i am talking about a program for the all around newbie or experienced, nvu is definately the best in my opinion

now FREEWEBS isn't an offline program, but i would recomend that higher than nvu for the newbie. it's a great site to get your feet wet in drag and drop and html and you get your hosting free too.

now don't make me wite a list of all nvu features including features not found in most of the other free programs you listed. i still don't know why you didn't list nvu. it should gain at least 20% in popularity just because it's open source! nvu can be limitless if people start getting off their *bottom* and start making it even better. like i said. the only cons i see in nvu is that there is little support(but i never needed any myself) and it's a little buggy at times(worse in earlier versions). i don't think they are going to come out with any more versions to it but have you even tried the newest version? maybe you are referring to the older versions?

now to wrap this up, i do i talk highly of nvu because i have used most of the top free webage editors out there and there are only 3-4 that can be compared with nvu so nvu would definately be in my top 5 but that's my objective opinion in my own experience. i haven't used 1/2 those editors you mentioned nor did i even hear of 1/4 of them so i am limited in my opinion. but that's why i would have liked a top 5. because i love trying out new programs to see if there is something better out there for ME. now i hope this last paragraph is more objective and fair for ya. hope you get that top 5 soon so i can check it out and see if there are any programs in that list i haven't tried yet smile.gif

actually, create a top 3. 3 good programs that a newbie or advance user can use. you already have your 5 recomended. then write a little bit about each one and why #1 on the list is #1 and why #3 on the list is #3 etc...

also, make sure this list includes 100% freeware. not shareware or software you will need to upgrade after a trial period. some of the programs you originally listed aren't 100% free, bud.

now i am going to download one of your recomends that i haven't tried before

Sorry, i am booked with Notepad +++ I haven't tried that though. I plan to currently. Anyway, i prefer to play with web-development, anything that helps me to test and work on my php scripts as a beginner (-gotta be friendly, tey interface)

Relax anwiii, do not take it so personaly, this topic was made in april 2005, the list is not updated at all, still, the top 3 would be the same as the ones included in the top 5, anyway, there are other html editors today much better then those and also much better then NVU, and you just can not say to me the truth, only your opinion just i am expressing my own, i am not the word of reason here, i just like to express my opinions and experience in here.

Perhaps later i will do an updated top 5 free/open source html editors and/or website builders, but sorry for not attend but i have a lot of work with my day jobs, but you can do one yourself if in fact you would like to help begginers or just give them your opinion with your own top 5, i will do one but not just yeat.

OneMinute, try php designer, it is free and the best in my opinion to create/edit/test php scripts.

I have used nvu for a while now. And no offense to it, cause its a solid html editor, but i find sometimes that it freezes on me, and
other little things that just bug me. I'm going to try some of the other editors on the list. I bet all these programs are good and have
very distinct features. No single editor is right for every person. Lyon was wise to have a list of ones he recommended.

Its all a matter of taste tongue.gif

i would if i was a web designer. i would probably have about three catagories eah with a top 3. reason why i can't do this is because i have only tried about 10 editors out there since my job doesn't revolve around building websites constantly. why i suggested you do it or someone else that has time that can be objective.

obviously different catagories because each editor has it's pros and cons and some people using them require different tools( beginners vs. pros)

seidhrith- the less resources you have the more any program will crash. i've tried several editors that will crash nvu is semi wysiwyg so it will take up more resources than other programs. make sure you have the newest version too because the later versions did freeze more. but once in a while for me, nvu will freeze. i live with it only because it has almost everything i ever needed in a program and it was a lot simpler to use than most

lyon, i downloaded one of your "free" recomends but it was a trial version. this to me is not a free editor

now don't get me wrong bud. i am relaxed smile.gif i also appreciated your recomends. just saying that a little more time could have been put in to it where the list could have been appreciated more. and the fact nvu wasn't on your long list smile.gif probably wont be on any top 3 i'm sure, but nvu shoulda definately been among the long list for sure(yes, in my opinion only)
