<br />Computers are evolving at an alarming speed and many people will in fact be sitting home because the factories they work in has hired computers instead of them. Computers cannot take over completely but will so in many fields.<br />

well i agree with this one and some of the replies on this thread. computers can't take over completely. primary reason is that computers are created by man themselves. they create computers and program them in a way to perform functions faster and probably more efficient that humans. indeed they can take over in certain aspects such as working in factories. computers don't have the complete intelligence and ability to completely decide for themselves. i think the readers are misled by the phrase "take over" in the thread title. they are led to believe that computers can "take over" or rebel against humans and rule the world for themselves. they can "take over" in the sense that they can replace humans in certain functions that need a faster processing. humans can't work as fast as computers, which is enough for computers to replace them in their jobs, but it doesn't suffice that they can take over humans intellectually.

i doubt that computers will take over the world they are what we need to function but they will never become a problem where they will take over the world.

For a AI to try to conquer the Earth it would need AI coding for philosophizing, but then an AI specific in that would have no capabilities other then that. An AI can't just expand it's code to give it AI code for anything else, since that would be creativity and computers can't have that. I'm more afraid of some virueses or trojans taking over possible future cleaning, working, babysitting robots and possibly killing someone through that. Now that's scary.

I think it will be possible in the far future, not the close future since we are not so far yet in developping such programs or machines

the creation of robots / computers have two sides:
- hardware
- software

nowadays people are trying to make the shape of robots more humanoid, but the functionality of its form plays a huge toll
creating it more like a human, makes it also more fragile in some parts, and also it needs a lot more machinery
imagine if they try to remake the human hand, it would take a lot of tiny parts and nothing said about the amount of power those robo hands would have; robo crime in making ^^

before an AI would even try to conquer the earth, it would need some sort of programmation in its code that allows itself to create new code and improve it. a group of programmers would be required in order to create such code
the movie I-Robot shows only a small part about what could happen to the world, terminator shows again the bad part of robo creation and coding but in this case the worst part

what the future will give us also depends on us, the future programmers or evil-masterminds ^^
probably if computers or robots would take over, can be the result of a research project done by the the world leaders

I don't think it is quite possible for computers to take over this world and the people above me have already stated very good reasons.
AI can be directed to improve itself by seeing things but I don't think it is possible for AI to have "creativity" in it though. Even the robots in military or something, take an example of a robot who is designed to save humans, they don't have the creativity to decide, it's we who feed into them how to make out which has higher chances of living and then save that person. And the way the AI will be calculating those chances are based on some parameters that we will set, AI won't ever be able to discover the will power of a person to live and I don't think even we can code that into AI so I don't think AI will ever be so creative to think on it's own without any parameters set by us.
And the disaster in I,robot was because V.I.K.I. was designed without the 3 laws integrated into it. If we don't ever have someone to commit that same mistake, we can very well "save this Earth".
Though I even somewhat agree to Zues on this-

That I think is something we could be worrying about.

I guess it depends how you define take over.
In a job situation it is not only possible but it have been shown in history.
Many jobs have been replaced. Computers do some thing better and can work in environments that we can’t.
It would be silly to send a person into outer space to bounce signals back to the earth manually or operate machinery laboriously in a factory.

Money which is power can be managed entirely by computers and a smart program.

As computer advance they may someday be able to out think humans.
Tasks aren’t the only thing they might be able to do, perhaps someday they could handle things like law or governmental tasks or as a talking friend a computer may even fill a need for companionship.

However the question may be - Can people take over the world from the machines?
As we rely on computers we could forget what it is like to make decisions and manage things any other way.
That would mean we will have to be educated, interesting and have something a robot will never have – the human spirit.
In other words we would have to learn to be human again.

I don't imagine computers overthrowing mankind and enslaving us anytime soon. I do, however, see them being used instead of human beings for all sorts of jobs. I don't mind that at all. Computers can be efficient and cheap. Oh and they can't whine if you don't give them Saturday evening off so that they can go to the movies smile.gif

Mankind's job in response to this slow "takeover" is to learn how to do stuff that computers can't do. Job security, in other words.

Nah, I dobt that that time would come. Atleast they have to be ALOT smarter to do that.

This will not happen on the futur cause computers if programmed with Artificial Intelegence will be programmed only to things that amuse or help human and not to control us biggrin.gif
