Funny you should say the first line, as i have started from scratch for version 4.0. Hopefully it'll increase performance. The MySQL version will be intertwined with the flat-file version. By default it will be using flat-files until you install the MySQL schema it requires. Then it'll only use the config.log file to see if you changed back to flat-file; if not, everything else will be obtained through MySQL. It will also have AJAX support (i.e. script.aculo.us, quite possibly the latest version). It'll have a new GUI for both the shoutbox (not that much of a difference, but it's more "eye-candy-ish") and admin panel (in fact, i've been spoiled by the new look, that when i look at the current stable version, i find it to be ugly). It'll contain a user system if MySQL support is installed. I still have to implement some features in the admin panel and make more JavaScript functions. But version 4.0 won't be out real soon, as i have other projects which currently have higher priority, which i'm almost done with. Once i'm done with these other projects, i'll get working back on version 4.0.

I've been contemplating whether or not i should make the script revert to flat-file in the case of unable to connect to the MySQL database. The only thing that's been keeping me from implementing this is that that would mean guests could use the usernames of registered members and pretend to be them. However, i may just add an option in the admin panel for the admin to choose for such a thing to be enabled or not.
