Personally I use invisionfree.net. I think that it is pretty cool. However, you really need to know your HTML to get the site customized. It also doesn't give you as much choices as invisionplus but I find it nicely. If you want an example you can either click my signature picture or PM me for the web URL.

But for any free forum I suggest getting a domain forwarding thing so it is easy to remember.

I have used some much acclaimed open source forums like phpBB and loved them. However, since I'm not one of the best technical minded person, I might have somehow missed several of their features. One very likely problem I had with all of them is that I want to give permission to all users to create their own category and have never been able to do so. Could someone please let me know if there's actually a way to get it done.

uh... i also tried goboardz.com , and its really easy to use but not really that appealing to the eye, and doesn't really let you customise it as much as i would like

Honestly all you have to really do is buy a board like IPB or use a free one like phpbb get some hosting and install it. Then you have no ads you can edit and customize it to your own needs without these major drawbacks.

I used to use this site a lot for forums.
Very good, only 1 ad on the site (descrete), and reliable too.

Have your heard about Forumotion?
It's very easy to sign up, you simply need to provide the forum name, subdomain (what will appear in the URL), password, email address and the category of the forum. All of this takes around two minutes, after which you can choose the initial forum skin, then you are taken directly to your new forum.

Give it a try wink.gif : create forum

Hope this can help!

In my opinion, Invision board is best free service. They just add a row of google ads on page header, which shouldn't bother you much, as the ad color matches to the board skin pretty well. The admin control panel is much more versatile. Only thing they lack is a true search capability.

This is what you see when you try to make a serch in the forum
However, they dont bug you on number of members or monthly bandwidth. You can try it - my personal opinion.

Well said - And thanks for the (call it) 'Review' smile.gif I might just give those sites a try.
Personally - There's NOTHING that beats a forum board on your own stable webhost - For the latter; Trap17.
It's a lot more expandable and "personalised", which beats the free stuff here. :]
