A while ago I experimented with a replacement shell, and I couldn't figure out how to get out of it. But that was then (when I used Windows ME, that piece of trash). Even today, I don't find anything wrong with the real Windows XP shell, it's enough for me, and is supported by Microsoft, not that their support is the greatest.

I'm just wondering.... does this speed up the operating system any at all? I've got an older computer I'm thinking about putting XP on, but it's probably gonna choke.

If these speed it up any, though, that would be nice.

Also, are there any for Windows ME? That's the thew old computer in question now is running, just would be fun maybe. smile.gif

Although it is a interest tutorial and could be useful, just remember that if you do it wrong you or your computer doesn't like what was done it could mess up your computer very bad and most likly you would have to do a complete re-installion of OS.

Also i highly doubt a restore will fix it either so just to give a fair warning.

I replaced a shell with a program but when I it tries to run it I get an error.

I think it has something to do with how the .exe has to be run from its own folder as it tries to look for its other files.

is there a switch that I can put it in registry so that when I call out that .exe file it will know to start in its folder?

I've tried to do set path in autoexec.bat and it doesn't work

the only way I've found so far is for me to have shell call out a batch file and in that batch file it calls out a shortcut link which points to the actual program.

the problem and ugly side of this is that when shell tries to run the program... a dos prompt comes up.. undedesirable but that is all I can do for now...

HELP OR SUGGESTOINS please?!? thanks.

Dontmaimyourself:

thanks sooo much for this - it worked like a charm!

Held off uninstalling Aston Shell for months because of all the warnings. Decided today was the day. Spent hours trying to restore Win desktop and taskbar.

All fixed now. Thanks again.

a lil help 4u
How To Change The Windows Xp Shell.

Replying to Trap FeedBacker

You could just run the *.Bat file as minimized
And you shouldn't see it when it's ran.
Right click the *.Bat file and goto properties
Then goto 4th field, "RUN:" and select Minimized and then apply it.
You should be able to do this for the *.Bat file or any shortcut itself.
