What do yall think about the pound putting animals to sleep if they are not adopted in a certian period of time?

I had 2 cats and both were spayed and neutered. Then we started feeding a stray and she hung around. She then had 2 kittens and then later 1 of them had 3 and the other had 5 then the stray had 3 more. We couldnt get her spayed because we couldnt afford it. But we had 16 cats! ohmy.gif And this all happend in about 1 year. We gave 2 away 2 ran off and 1 was hit by a car. So that leaves 11. We cant really afford to feed them all but we do and they are healthy. But we got to get rid of some. We want to keep only 4. But we dont want to take them to the pound cuz we have kinda grown attached to them so we dont want them put to sleep. That is why i want to knwo what you think about the pounds way of doing things.

I think the pound should advertise or something and get good homes for them before they put them to sleep. I know they cant keep every animal they get forever but they could put more effort into getting them good homes.

BTW if anyone lives in louisiana and you wanty a cat PM me hehehe wink.gif

I think it sucks...simple enough? Well, at least they could give them more time but around here(MN/ND) its like, no time, I hate it.

FYI me and my mom=dog/cat freaks :/ well for me I like cats more, but eh.

That's a touchy subject. Unfortunately, the most practical solution would be to put the cats down. As for the pound, animal shelters are non-profit organizations, they can't spend money for ads on every pet. It's sad how many they have to put down, but there's just so many without a home. Listen to Bob Barker: have your animal spayed or neutered.

i believe they have to be put down *ONLY* when they are too old already, or they are suffering from any illness which would just prolong their agony.

why not make a website for them? like an adoption site. smile.gif then link to other cat sites out there to promote the cats you have for adoption? smile.gif may be a nice project for you. there would be cat lovers out there willing to give your extra cats some home. smile.gif

I hate how animals can just be killed if they're not adopted. True, it helps to spay and neuter your pets (and I encourage all pet owners with dogs or cats that are around 6 mos. of age to do so!) but if you can't afford it, where do you turn to? We adopted our puppy (I shouldn't say puppy - she's a pudgy 2 year old with more brains than a few of my friends) from the animal shelter: a far better alternative than going purebreed shopping, in my mind. They had gotten her an appointment to be spayed with the Houston SPCA, where they did it for only $30. Which is definitely worth it! A lot of male dogs are on the prowl in our neighborhood.

I've visited a couple of no-kill shelters and I'm surprised at how much love the owners shower on their pets. These are victims of abuse, of neglect, of torture, the likes of which we humans may never understand. And yet, even the sweetest of animals can go to be euthanized on a whim. If they're not adopted in time, they may never brighten anyone's lives.

No animal asks to be chained up and caged away. No animal ever wants to be neglected. It just happens. And that's one of many cruelties that humankind has put on animals.

Anyways, yes, I hate it. If an animal is in pain, I would put it out of its misery. But if an animal is spry and healthy, yet there is no room for it, I would never have the heart to kill it. Knowing me, I'd probably bring it home and keep it, come hell or highwater.

Anyways...yeah, I strayed off the topic a bunch :/

Yeah, i agree with your point of view on this situation. Maybe they should give the animal away for free if they're considering killing it instead of actually killing the animal. It would make somebody's life more enjoyable. (The animal wouuld be more happy too)

I'd be happy to take a few off your hands...I don't know what the familia would think of it though. We've already got one cat, and I don't know if anyone wants to put up with any more! haha...aside from that, I live all the way in New Jersey, and that's a damn long trip to make...heh

Anyway, sometimes I think putting an animal to sleep is perfectly necessary. In the event of terminal illness, there is absolutely no reason to prolong its agony. Thus, to relieve it of future suffering would be the most practical thing to do...

Geez, I don't want to bring euthanasia into this at all, but I can't help but think about it at the same time. I guess that's a topic for another day rolleyes.gif

Anything should be put down if it's in pain and dying. I do include humans in that, if the person wants it. Otherwise, on the surface, I don't see anything wrong with it either way. There is peace in sleep and death. (I imagine it's peaceful just being an animal too.) They won't have to starve in bad shelters, waiting behind bars forever (applies to both good and bad). If aliens invaded us and turned us into their pets, I wouldn't... mind? our current shelter policies being applied to us. I might want to be 'put down' after a while. We would all like to die a painless death.

i don't agree at all about putting an animal asleep just because it's taking that one longer to find a home than some of the others. my adopted dog, Hannah, was actualy schedualed to be put down, but she wasnt put down on schedual, and we came along a bit later and brought her home. i'm quite glad they didn't out her down, because she's a puppy all the time biggrin.gif

the only time i approve of putting an animal down is if it's visciouse and can't be re-trained to not be evil, or if it's going through a lot of pain and isnt going to survive anyways. but for anything else, i'm 100% against it.
