Think of a domain like a PO box, you own the house (Win 2003) but the mail man can't find it, or atleast not without complex directions (IP address) so rather you register a PO box at your local postoffice (Domain Registrar) so when every someone sends you a letter it goes to your PO box and you handle it from there. Inorder to have a domain you need to register it at a "Post Office" just search domain registrar in google. you will also need some other backend stuff running on win 2003, I don't know if it comes with it. But my guess is that if you had to ask about this, then you are bitting of more then you can chew, so to speak.

Or you have just bought Win 2003 server? Server and domain stuffs are entirely two different things. You may have yourdomains.com which you must register from some companies that register domains for example : register.com, godaddy.com, directnic.com, smallbusiness.yahoo.com and many more other companies. Domain can be hosted in Linux server or windows server. If order to have your own website running on the world of internet, you need domain and host. If you host your website in your own server - your server must have nameserver to which you need to point your domain dns record. Just register your choice domain and host it in your own server. But I wonder whether you've bought web host server or just local computer server for testing websites locally. |

about the applicatios you need to set up your web server you first should think in what you want, and then choose the right webserver application. there are so many soft you coul use and some are free, like iis, or apache, or other payed applications like jsp, macromedia coldfusion, and well, it's up to your needs! good luck!

you should not hire the domain but the only way you could use it is "paying for regitser"this pay is for one year, you would repay for another year.
and i think the domain could not been hired,if you really hired a domain using one year,it's still not yours.just register from enom, godaddy and so on. at win 2003 control panel, you would got the details of how to bind the domain to your server.i'm not used win 2003 for server,as i know the unix system is more safe than windows system specially in server enviorment. thank you. guangdian. |

No you're right microsoft doesn't pay godaddy for their domain. Microsoft (now I'm not certian about this, but it seems like a good guess) has become what you could call their own domain registrar. SO they don't pay anybody, they do however do pay membership fees to icann. You'll notice that the registrats often say something like "plus ICANN registration fee" And yes they do all share databases, that's why when you first registre a name it could take several hours for it to work because all the databases around the world must be made aware of your presence.
By the way ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers |
