It depends - if you like to optimize for google meta tags are ignored by google crawler. In yahoo or others search engines the meta tags are visible.
SEO is the most important thing to make a good position in search engines. I prefer web gold - it make a good position in google.
Page rank is only a one factor from many.

Meta tags are not ignored by Google. It doesn't display the actual tags and their values in its index, but it doesn't ignore them either.

What does SEO stands for? Search engine ....
What do you mean with "web gold"?.
I thought that the criteria for Google was incoming links, outgoing links and meta-tags. Aren't they?

mizako... SEO=search engine optimization. web gold is an app webmasters
use to monitor their site rankings in a multitude of search engines. just
try to google the app for more details.

metatags are useful for ANY search engine bot, so dont neglect it in your web
pages.

one tip to enhance SEO: use ALT in your images when appropriate.
EXAMPLE:
QUOTE
<img src='style_images/1/logo4.gif' alt='Powered by Invision Power Board' border="0" />

don't just place a crappy ALT description... think of something that will be
REALLY descriptive of your page. example: if you have a FORUMS
image, don't just put alt='Forums'. try, alt='Forums discussing the merits
of meta tags and other methods in search engine optimization'. a search
engine bot crawling your pages would glean more info on your pages from
the latter example than the first. these hidden codes beneath the web interface
you see in the browser can raise your rankings in search engines. smile.gif (of course,
every search engine algorithm differs, but it will help in most cases).

and that's just one tip. tongue.gif more later if i can still remember them tongue.gif

Also, does it not take <title> tags into account?

Just like why we have "Trap17.com -> Quoting a Post in are meta tags really good for SEO? - Trap 17"

That's obviously why Google Spiders index each and every page. smile.gif

you are correct there zenchi smile.gif

btw, just remembered that a DOMAIN NAME does a great deal in
giving your site good search engine rankings. smile.gif if you search for
"screensavers" for example, the search engine will spit out the
most relevant sites/pages first -- that being the domain bearing
a name nearest to the word searched. so choosing a good
domain/subdomain name helps a lot in SEO and search engine
rankings. smile.gif

choose well. biggrin.gif
