Can someone assist with the diagnosis and debug, please?

A rookie Linux user, but I am comfortable with the terminal, if I have a good instruction set.

Thanks.

CODE
sudo chown yourusername ~/.dmrc
chmod 644 ~/.dmrc

That should do the trick as it has a good successful rate fro mthe various topics I have seen about this.

nope, didn't work, but this did:
CODE
sudo chmod 700 /home/jim
sudo chmod 644 /home/jim/.dmrc

reference: http://www.ubuntuproductivity.com/journal/...error-on-login/
For those wondering what the /.dmcr file does, it apparently manages the user language and encoding information on a per user basis.
refer to this article for more details.
