Hey I just got the free domain name recently and I cant figure out how to get it working. I've never had a domain name before and cant find any info anywhere sorry. I posted on the free domain name thread but its burried already and I'm hoping I will get more a of a response to my questions here by posting a thread.
QUOTE Hey I need some help with domains. I haven't been able to find any info so far as search terms are too common. If there is a link to this can you please sticky it or something. Domain: http://sonesayi.com Hosting: http://sonesay.trap17.com My problem.. I have registered my domain and I have no idea how to configure it so it works. At this stage I would like my domain name to point to my existing trap17.com hosting account. Any help appreciated thank you. |

I assume you have the free domain from ComputingHost. If that is the case then all the nameservers are already set up. All you need to do is log in to your cPanel ( http://www.sonesay.trap17.com/cpanel/ ) and go to the Parked domains section. Tap in your new domain (sonesayi.com) and hit OK. Give it a few minutes and it will work.
That is all there is to it |

Thanks it works when I did that but I noticed my domain wasn't staying on the location bar. When I click on my domain name http://sonesayi.com It works and loads the index.php file that contains a header location forwarding it to the folder 'si'. I then get the location of http://sonesay.trap17.com/si instead. I remember someone had this similar problem but I'm not sure how they resolved it and I cant find the thread. This has to be a common problem and I'm sure someone knows how to fix this. I would rather have my short domain name across my entire site then just used for first entry into it. Does anyone know a solution?

The surefire way to do it is to change the domain name for your account. However, that will cost you a further 15 credits. If you go to http://www.trap17.com/manage/ and log in, then click the option to change your domain name. Enter your new domain ( sonesayi.com ) and it will replace your current Trap17 subdomain with your new domain. This costs 15 credits, and will remove your Trap17 subdomain (i.e. any links people made to sonesay.trap17.com will no longer work).
I bought a domain for my hosting account a while ago, and just parked it using cPanel. I have never noticed it redirecting back to the subdomain. Perhaps the problem could lie with the PHP redirect. Perhaps try using a .htaccess file to redirect users? That way you can redirect everyone who uses the old address to the new address, and stop your scripts reverting to the old address too. |
