Well since I really need a place to find stuff like this, I finally found out where I can get real information, not all this WHO-IS junk that people think is correct.
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm Great site, and has a lot of other tools for webmasters, some you might have to pay for, if anybody has a better IP lookup tool please post or PM me so I can add it to this ongrowing list. Maybe Trap17 should make something |

Wow that's a great tool. Thanx for sharing. I am at present surfing from Tuticorin, but it shows Chennai nearly 450Kms from here. Is this more accurate?

It gives to location of the owner of ip adress, most of the time thats your ISP (internet service provider).
Sometime it's thea headquarters of your ISP so the location give can be some distance away from you. Most of the time the country will be correct, and in a small country like Belgium the city given is close to real one (in my case about 20 km). |

A clever man learns from his own mistakes, a WISE man learns from those of OTHERS ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Group: [HOSTED] Posts: 978 Joined: 12-April 06 From: Essex, UK Member No.: 21,719 |
yup i belive kdr is right, this service can only find your isp's servers which you use to access the internet. It cant actually locate YOU unless you are an ISP server or have an absolute direct connection to the internet, and by that i mean without an isp, just simply plugged in to the internet!
But i spose it could be used to find lying IM chatters who say theyre from your country but you can find out if theyre from another country, but i dont think id use it for anything else, and i assume the only way to find out exactly where someone is would be to do a trace route on a packet from that ip address and find a main switchboard it goes through, probably at a telephone exchange and then locate the exchange. Not sure if that would work though! |

That's pretty cool. Although I don't really have a use for it I might in the future. I almost thought at first it was gonna point out the exact location and I was gonna say that'd be a bit scarry. I would hope that no one eer makes it public if they do. Pretty neat tool. Now that I think about it I could use it for my website.

Interesting... when I vistied the site I found that it had already filled in all the details about my computer, but the amazing thing is that the IP it said I had was not an IP my computer uses! But every detail is correct, apart from the fact that it assumed I live in the city of Salford, which I don't.
But, I then ran ipconfig on my computer to see the IP my computer is actually using right now, and when I typed it in, the results were completely different. It actually thinks I'm from America, specifically Honolulu, Hawaii. That's completely wrong! |

For that, i use a firewall or a whois lookup when i want to know the owner of an ip adress or the owner of an entire block of ip's.
I know a litle tool name SmartWhoIs, it has less then 100 kb, in fact, it has less then 15 kb, but it is a windows xp like graphic interface application, so you will love it, doesn't take any ram memory because you don't need to install it, you just enter the ip and press enter, and it will show up what you need to know. If anybody wants this tool, just download it here: SmartWhoIs http://free-flash-clocks.trap17.com/SmartWhoIs.exe By the way, usefull tool this one too. Thanks for sharing. |
