Hello. I have searched the tutorial section and have seen many great tutorials.
One which I have not seen is how to create a torrent.

For this, I will be using uTorrent, the best torrent client, in my opinion. ( Windows Only )
( I'm sure that Azureus/ABC/etc.. would not be much different. )

Steps:

1. Have uTorrent open, and go to File >> Create New Torrent

2. Click "Add File" or "Add Directory" and select WHAT YOU WANT PEOPLE TO DOWNLOAD.
Add a tracker in the Trackers field. ( You can get this by going to what ever site you want to upload to. )
Then also check "Start Seeding".

All other options can be left at default.

3. Click Create and save as.

4. Go to what ever site you want to upload the torrent to, and follow the instructions they have posted. Also be sure to follow their rules.
It may take a couple of minutes for the file to be registered, but it will work...

5. MOST IMPORTANT for torrents, seed and share it. If you close the client (uTorrent), no one can get the file!

Thank you for letting us know how to work with torrents using UTorrent. However, I have a few questions:

1) When making a torrent, how big does the concluding file size for the file turn out to be? I will be kind of concerned if a torrent is over 1GB and I'm downloading it on my computer. tongue.gif

2) Is it possible to secure the torrents that you create by adding in a password? If so, how? Can you explain?

3) How come your description was spelled incorrectly? Leanring is spelled Learning. Just to let you know, not meaning to be a spell-freak or anything.

4) How do the first few people begin seeding the program? Won't it be kind of troublesome since it would take so long to download at a low seed rate? How do people manage to get the number out of the low range without becoming leechers? (Leechers meaning they stop downloading it and delete it).

Hi, i liked the tutorial but i differ with you, i use bitlord client. Anyway most of torrent clients are the same.

1) The torrent system supports as much files as you want of 4Gb. For example you could upload a package of 10 movies of high definition. Many clients let you select wich files of the torrent you want.

2) Torrents are for share information, not to make it private. If you want to transfer files mount an ftp server.

3) I really dont matter if hi has mispelled something, it must be a type error. For example english is not my first language but o try to make the others understand what i write.

4) You have to let the client open and if someone starts to download the file your client will start to seed. But there you have a mistake. To seed you dont need to have the file downloaded, torrents are managed in parts, so can seed the part that you have already downloaded and that makes torrents the best file sharing system.

Regards, Seba.

1) The actual .torrent file should be really small. ( ~15 KB ) The files which it will direct you to download from others can be very large. ( Any size...so just look what you download. )
( seba1killer: what do mean by 4gb? )

2) You cannot secure the torrents themselves. Ways to make it more secure is to add the files into a rar file, and give that file a password, then make a torrent out of that file.

3) .......really? ( I'll try my best. )
EDIT: Where are my mistakes, I can't find them.

4) People first start seeding when they download the file from a website, like PirateBay. ( Or where ever you uploaded the .torrent file. ) It may take a while to get enough seeders, if you have a slow speed, or the file is relatively large, but that is life. For the last part, I take it you mean, how do people get higher ratio ( upload/download ratio ). Only was is to seed what you downloaded.

If you have any more questions, please ask.

I've been wondering how people create and run Torrents, and this tutorial has answered many of my questions. Thank you very muchly, PhyberOptycs.

Just to clarify though, if you create a torrent you have to keep your computer switched on until somebody starts using it, or it can't be used? And once somebody has used your torrent, do they count as a "seed" and act as another place to get the data from?
