Hi everyone.

I just searched if someone has posted a review about hostsnake but it seems that no one did. So here I am.
Before getting here (and even before knowing about trap), I was hosted by hostsnake.com.

The features for the free hosting are :

- no ads (interesting)
- 5gb of space and 10gb bandwidth
- PHP and 5 mySQL databases
- one ftp account
- your subdomain will look like http://username.hostsnake.com

Anyway, I removed my site from there because .htaccess files aren't allowed. Moreover, the function mail was disabled, so your site can't send mails.

I won't mark this free web hosting because I don't want to judge it, but anyway I think it's quite a good one in the wide ocean of free web hosting...

And now for an "objective" review:

Name: HostSnake
Webspace available: 19.53 GB (20,000 MB)
Bandwidth: 292.96 GB (300,000 MB)
Filesize limit: 10 MB
File count limit: -
URL Type: Domain/Subdomain
Upload Method: FTP, Browser
Forced ads: -
Scripting: PHP (safe mode ON), SSI
Databases: MySQL (1, 1 account)
Misc: None shown on site; LayeredPanel, Awstats, Fantastico, PhpMyAdmin (4 features)
Penalties: Spinoff/cobrand of Erupt.com

Final score: 16.08% (0.2009785989128160821691176470589)

.htaccess should count as a penalty feature, but I didn't make it one, since I don't want to derate them too much.

There overslling like crazy. They won't be able to support all the space or bw. At least with Trap17 you know that you can fill up your bw meter, and your account won't get deleted.

It's too bad I can't put a penalty for overselling. Because you never know.

BTW, if I post a tri-daily (once per 3 days) webcomic whose image takes up an average of 125 KB and keep up a blog which I post in on average 3 tiems a day, how long will it take before the 500 MB is filled up? I currently use about 20 MB.

Thanks for the objective review as you said. I was just pointed out to this free web hosting service. I said that I wasn't that good about doing reviews and plus, they aren't even that coherent about the amount of space and bw for free accounts... On the home page, they say 20gb space and 300gb bw but when you click on plans, there aren't the same features... Kind of weird because in your account, after registering, you get the 20gb and 300gb stuffs... We would need someone to fill the whole space to see which one is true.

{today = march 22 2008}

Are they just down? or is it more serious and did they stop their service?

Whatever the case, it's back up now. smile.gif

Saw that host, I never tried it. Awesome web space, speed, and bandwidth, but Safe Mode and htaccess off, meaning dynamic content such as forums, CMS, etc., won't work well on it. Also doesn't sound very reliable.
