There isn't a need to download an encyclopedia to search for file formats. You can always search online as the database archive is always updated and you will get very accurate information.
http://www.sharpened.net/helpcenter/extensions.php http://www.fileinfo.net/ Likewise, doing a search on google with just the file extension will certainly bring you information about the file format. e.g. "*.txt" or "*.doc" |

Its better to download an offline version so that it can be written to a cd and used for future reference on a computer without internet. Does anyone know the link to the offline version?
