I have now received 2 e-mails from people stating that the zip files they downloaded from my site are corrupt. I have had to mail them to get them through. I can download the zips from my site just fine and so have most others. Does anybody have any idea what can be causing this? Do some IPS have some kind of protection (like a firewall) in place that can cause this? I am befuddled.

It would have to be on there side, when downloading sometimes the infomation gets left behind in the download thus corrupting it and making it unable to download completly.
Best suggestion would be to reupload the file again and ask htem to download it. This usually corrects the problem. |

Something in between them and the file is getting in the way somehow then, right? To check the zip files they are trying to download, I go directly to my site, download the zip and the file is OK. |

What Operating System are they using? I know that some of the more advanced features, like encryption with WinZip, don't work on other operating systems. I'd try asking them that and see what there responses are.

Some archive/compression software have a feature to repair corrupted ZIP or other archive files. You could tell them if the archiving program they're using supports that, to go ahead and try it, and see if that works.

This could simply mean that those users of your site have an unstable router or connection and it stops in the middle of a download so the file doesnīt download completely and although a zip is saved on their HD then itīs impossible to open.

Within WinRAR there is a feature to repair RAR files.
If they are severly damaged you need some repairblocks to repair the archive. (is usefull when you use multi part RAR files). Another program that can do the job is QuickPAR (freeware). Here can the sender make some repair blocks with the original file. On the reciever side you can check if your file is not damaged and it says howmany blocks it need for repair. When the sender sends you the blocks (i.s.o. the whole file) you can fix your file. This works easy and if you already have 2 versions of the file maybe you can get a correct version when you add the 2 files. The only thing you need to start is the program and some blocks from the sender. Normally a firewall can only filter some IP packets (and it deletes the whole pakket). Damaged files can be caused by some (bit)faults on your internet access. (like phone line , DSL line or Cable). You notice this problem the best when you download big files. In unix world they add often and .md5 check file by the big iso file. This md5 file can also be checked with Quickpar. This post has been edited by kdr_98: Nov 22 2006, 04:01 PM |
