Free services are preferred, but cheap services can also be considered. The most important thing is how much you would pay. Your own domains won't be free without any expense. So cheapest price is the best. The following is the cheapest price I've ever found.
http://www.domainsarefree.com/ : The cheapest fee of the first year : $3.99 for ".com", ".net", ".org", ".bix", ".info", ".us". http://www.registerfly.com/ 1. $5.50 .net domain promotion For the next 72 hours register any .net domain for the low price of $5.50 /year. (I don't know which day is the first day, but it does work since I registered one today) Make sure you are logged into your RegisterFly account You must have at least one .net domain name purchase in your cart Enter the code "NETSPECIAL". 2. $1.99 .info domain promotion For the next 48 hours register any .info for the low price of $1.99 /ea (It must be work untill tomorrrow) Make sure you are logged into your RegisterFly account You must have at least one .info domain name purchase in your cart Enter the code "INFOSPECIAL" http://www.godaddy.com 1. .us : $6.95 2. .biz : $5.95 http://www.1and1.com $5.99 : .com, .net, .org, .info, .us, .name Please note: The services at 1and1.com are only available to residents of the U.S. and Canada. Residents of the U.K. can join at http://1and1.co.uk. |

HM.....interesting guide. I find it quite informative. Just to note, these prices are in USD right?

I have been using godaddy.com for my domain for quite some time already. I find it quite good. Anything price lower than godaddy's...I am not so confident.... -Shackman |

The price raises to $9 next year and the third year. I post it for who wants to try his or her first domain. I think a cheapest test will be a good test. |

Yahoo is offering $2.99 per year (that’s including any available domain name with com net org info biz us) with the maximum of 5 years. I do not gain any personal profit from promoting Yahoo’s domain purchases. But I happened to like Yahoo’s DNS control and Yahoo is well trust in my book. This offer isn’t better than the $1.99 they had few months ago but certainly better than their usual $4.99 or even $9.99 domain offers.
Here’s the gray prints QUOTE Waived setup fee offer is open to new Web Hosting customers only. Limit one offer per customer, and one use per customer on a single account. Yahoo looks cheap but I've heard stories of people trying to transfer out of yahoo and it's apparently really hard. See the following links for bad experiences:
http://www.nonetalk.com/viewtopic.php?p=851#851 http://pandaboy.blogsome.com/2005/08/07/domain-name-yahoo/ I know someone who uses domain site and they offer .com domains for $6.99/year. |

QUOTE(cmatcmextra @ Oct 16 2005, 01:37 PM) ...I've heard stories of people trying to transfer out of yahoo and it's apparently really hard. See the following links for bad experiences: Going off topic: this is due to making your domain lock by Yahoo. Only the owner of domain can unlock the domain via domain control. Yahoo techs cannot enter your account. That's why the transfer is hard...not because of Yahoo but the extra security that each user decided to put. Remember, it's not the service or the hardware; it's the user But I'm not defending Yahoo. Yes, they have confirmed me over the phone saying that the renewal cannot accept the special promotion. Which means after 5 years I would have to pay the regular price. But I'm betting on the fact that in 5 years the domain purchase price would go down. If not, I'll let it die for a day or two and then rebuy it back. |

url worked for me... but is that a referal url?
Alot of webhosts also offer a free domain with their web host service. Even with cheap web hosting plans. Definately look into that before you buy a domain... because instead of registering a domain name at $6.95 a month... you can get hosting at $4.95 a month and get a free domain. |
