I would like to learn to program in AJAX because that where the web is headed and wondered if there's a good place to learn it somewhere [for free]

I don't want to disappoint you, but there are almost no free AJAX courses and trainings . If you want a professional AJAX training, take a professional paid course.
I did a little search, but there ar almost no free training. Perhaps you could find soms scripts, but not of them are professional and very good.

Sorry, but, on a serious note; this is the first time I'm hearing of it, and, basically, I have no idea what it is, lol.

Straight from Google (it's not that hard to use).

for simplest , ajax is made up of many exists web technology, like javascript + dhtml + css + dom + ... etc.
that's a way for refresh web page(most is data page) without page reload. just like desktop apps do.
