I agree about that.
You shall see that most professional sites have a white background and they choose two contrasting colors to put up the site. eg: blue and yellow/green and brown.
Dark sites will look great with some photoshop art. A gui with blue and white will perfectly match a black background.
I've posted a link about color schemes above. Meanwhile proper color selection can give your site a personality
blue- cool
red- aggresive

But as others have said, it always depend on what type of site are you going to create. But you will have to match up the theme with a suitable personality.

it depends on the kind of website. corporate sites usually have white colors, with contrasting colors. I think these site are hard to do. Cause its either its boring or it could look great.

Sidebars on each side with a main in the middle. A banner at the top.
You can also divide the main sections and sidebars into several different sections.
That is the design I use for my website.

the most colours i like when creating a design are black blue yelowish white and grey. All my sites have been worked on this idea

i prefer the lighter color codes but like saurus said, a website color cide deoends on the type and motive of the website. Gamind websites are usually dark while professional websites are lighter.

Black and Red is a good site combination also blue and black work u can also add white or grey to anyone of those also green works well with purple for some odd reason....

Lots of people spend ages trying to make really impressive stylesheets, not realising, that simple is often better,
For a start, it uses less bandwidth, as you dont have a huge stylesheet, for every possible eventuality, and hundreds of different DIVs.
Look at google, its plain white with a logo in the middle, and the logo is just text most days! And yet google is the most accessed page in the world!

When I make sites, I try to use a PHP stylesheet, which just uses a single colour to generate the rest of the stylesheet, so it just lightens and darkens the colours to make the stylesheet, and using different shades of the same colour often looks really effective! Also, this makes it very easy to have a few buttons for changing the colour scheme, as you just have to send the server a single 6 digit number to generate the stylesheet from!

I like light simple layouts better, with a logo on the top left, and content on the center or on the right, with a couple of 'gadgets' on the left, not too much (like the WordPress approach I'm used to).

Well if you like darks, depending on the concept of the website your designing the layout for, use whites// shades of whites & grays, stick ONE color in there, make sure everything looks very neutral

look into colorology (i think thats what its called ) and see how different colors make people react


*from my personal insight, i find it very unatractive when a website is all black & has yellow/neon green text
but then again thats my opinion
